Our Lady of Valdeiron
Patrona de Madridejos (Toledo)
Madridejos is a patron and mayor of Perpetua to Our Lady of Valdeiron; every 1 May her image is moved in Romeria from the hermitage to the people, with mass in the open air, offering of fruits, Rosario and Salve.
Origin and history
Our Lady of Valdeirón is the patron of Madridajos, also declared Mayor Perpetua of the villa in 1990. The devotion is ancient - some references go back to the 13th century - although the accessible sources do not corroborate it documented; what is consolidated is the traditional practice of its Romry.
The most characteristic devotional feature is the Romeria of May 1, with the ritual transfer of the image from its hermitage to the village, mass outdoors, offering of fruits and the prayer of the Holy Rosary and the Salve; it is also honored on August 15 in the local festive calendar. His patronage and title as Mayor Perpetua express the deep roots of the Virgin in the life of Madridajos.
A documented historical origin and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
