Our Lady of the Cape (Notre-Dame du Cap)

Marian devotion

On the banks of the San Lorenzo, in Trois-Rivières, is the most crowded Marian sanctuary in Canada. His history is based on a Rosary fellowship of 1694, on a stone chapel of the 18th century that is still standing, and on two episodes that the Church has never declared miraculous.

Documented history

The first wooden chapel was raised in 1659 on the initiative of Pierre Boucher. In 1694the first resident priest, Paul Vachon, erected there the The Rosary's Brotherhood: that is the thread that goes through the next three centuries.

The stone chapel that today is known as Little Sanctuary started in the second decade of the 18th century -1714 according to the sanctuary, 1717 according to the property record of Quebec, which attributes the carpentry to François Dufaux - and opened to veneration in 1720. It is often said that it is the oldest church in Canada preserved in its original location; it is necessary to reduce that claim, because the official record of Quebec does not hold it: it says that it is one of the oldest churches in Quebec, exceptionally preserved with most of its original elements. Defensible is to call it one of Canada's oldest stone churches.

En 1854, the year of the definition of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, a parishioner donated the image of the Virgin who continues to be venerated. From 1864 the parish priest Luc Désilets (1831-1888) strongly promoted devotion to the Rosary. And in summer of 1888 llegó a Trois-Rivières el franciscano Frédéric Janssoone (1838-1916), who for fourteen years was the great organizer of the pilgrimages and founded 1892 los T.S. Rosary AnnalesHe was beatified by John Paul II on 25 September 1988.

En 1902 los Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate They took custody of the sanctuary, when they arrived between thirty and forty thousand pilgrims a year. They created the Path of the Rosary, with fifteen bronze stations founded in France in 1906. The present basilica was built between the mid-1950s and the 1960s, the work of the architect Adrien Dufresne’, with a glass of Jan Tillemans and a Casavant organ of 5,425 tubes; raised to lower basilica in 1964 - some sources give 1954, but the data with precise date points to 1964 - and consecrated in 1976. The 10 September 1984 John Paul II visited the sanctuary before about seventy-five thousand pilgrims.

The ice bridge of March 1879

That winter it was necessary to cross the ice-cream San Lorenzo to carry the stone of the new parish church, and the ice did not come to a close. What is recorded in the academic source of reference - the biography of Désilets signed by historian Nize Voisine in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, written on the archives of the bishopric and of the sanctuary itself - that is: despite the Sunday pleas to Our Lady of the Rosary, he spent all winter without being able to cross, and already in March they understood that only a "miracle" would form the ice bridge; the prayers and on Friday, March 14, 1879 the river began to freeze because of an ice jam. The cartage ended on March 26.

One detail must be stressed: the historian intertwines the word "miracle". Report the term, don't subscribe. Quebec's property register uses an equally careful formula: "This event call milagrosoce.

The version of the sanctuary dates on March 16 and tells that between the 19th and 25th - from the feast of St. Joseph to the feast of the Annunciation - they crossed a hundred sled by horses. Hence the popular name of "Red Bridge". The vow of Désilets to consecrate the old church to Mary if the ice was formed, which is the devotional nerve of the story, does not appear in the academic biography And it is collected here as tradition.

With honesty: could not be established who put this story in writing for the first time. No document of 1879 or publication of those months that narrate it has been located; the oldest can be traced Annales founded in 1892, thirteen years later, and the accounts now accessible are all reworked from the 20th century.

The "prodigy of the eyes" of June 22, 1888

On that day the old stone chapel was solemnly dedicated as the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, to about five thousand faithful. The episode, however, did not occur before the crowd, but as the evening falls and with very few people present.

The three witnesses are recorded in a public and verifiable document - the commemorative plaque installed in 1988, catalogued by the Government of Quebec -: Luc Désilets, párroco; Pierre Lacroix; Y el padre Frédéric Janssoone. According to the story, the eyes of the image, which has them low, appeared open for a few minutes.

Now, about the state of that story you have to be exact:

  • No affidavit. No accessible source documents record, affidavit or signed testimony.
  • There is no research or ecclesial pronunciation. The academic biographies of the two priest witnesses, in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography, they don't even mention the episode, despite devoting long space to his work in the sanctuary.
  • The classic description that circulates comes from a brochure of the sanctuary itself. 1991One hundred and three years later.
  • The official vocabulary - of the sanctuary, the plaque and the Quebec record - is always «prodigy», nunca «milagro». The approved devotional literature is equally prudent: a book with printed of 1963 states that "at no time do the guardian parents of the sanctuary use the word" miracle, "and neither do I," and recalls that "only the Mother Church has the right to rule on these facts."

A common confusion should also be overcome: a canonical coronation recognizes and honors the cult of an image, does not value a concrete event. The 1904 was therefore not a recognition of the wonders.

Qué se venera y quaé significa

What is honoured here is Mary invoked under the title of the Most Holy Rosary, with a rare continuity: the fellowship of 1694 and the uninterrupted pilgrimages to this day. It's intercession, non-worship: God is worshipped, and Mary is worshipped by asking to intercede, which always leads to Christ. The Rosary is not a formula of automatic effectiveness, but a contemplation of the mysteries of Christ made in the company of his Mother.

Discernment and limits of this sheet

National Shrine of Canada recognized by the Canadian Episcopal Conference and minor basilica. Canonical coronations of 1904 (Saint Pius X) and 1954 (Pius XII): acts that recognize veneration, not wonders. The Church has never spoken about the events of 1879 and 1888that the sanctuary itself calls wonders. Désilets' vote is tradition, not documented data. It was not possible to establish the first written statement of the 1879 account, and there was no affidavit on that of 1888. The date of the elevation to the lower basilica has a discrepancy between sources (1954 compared to 1964). It is not said here that the chapel is the oldest church in Canada at its original location, because the official record does not claim it.

This page does not present objects, images or practices as autonomous powers or transform a devotional tradition into historical or scientific certainty.

Location on the map

The marker points to the precinct of the shrine of Notre-Dame-du-Cap, at 626 rue Notre-Dame Est, sector Cap-de-la-Madeleine of Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada. The coordinate corresponds to the whole of the sanctuary - which includes the basilica, the stone chapel and the Rosary Road - and coincides with the institutional identification of the enclosure.

Para meditar y orar

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, who you accompanied those who crossed the frozen river by trusting more in prayer than in calculation: teach us to repeat the mysteries of your Son without tiredness, until they remain in our hearts. Give us patience when the path does not open and gratitude when it opens. By Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
