Our Lady of the Thorn
Shrine of Hoyos del Espino (Avila)
On a hill near Hoyos del Espino, in the mountains of Gredos, a sanctuary of Gothic origin has a Romanesque size of the Virgin, one of the oldest in the province of Avila.
Origin and history
The shrine of Nuestra Señora del Espino, on a hill near Hoyos del Espino, is a late-15th-century Gothic construction with a typical baroque altarpiece from the 17th century; inside it is a Roman size of the Virgin, considered one of the oldest in the province of Avila.
Local tradition tells that, in the second half of the 12th century, the image was found or a girl appeared on a thorn, indicating the desired place for her temple; a story presented as legend. The party is held on September 8.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
