Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Miron
Sanctuary of the city of Soria
On the top of the hill of the Miron, in a lookout over Soria and the Duero, a hermitage guards Santa María del Miron, once held by patron of the city; each San Isidro the Labrador Brotherhood celebrates here its feast with animal auctions.
Origin and history
In medieval times, Santa María del Mirón was one of the thirty-five parishes of the city of Soria. With the depopulation of his neighborhood he lost the parish category and became a hermitage, keeping the devotion to the Virgin, considered patron of the city in medieval and modern times. The current building is baroque-rococo, of a single ship with dome on the cruise, dated around 1725, and before it is raised a monument to San Saturio of 1775. Tradition attributes a visionary origin of veneration, which the sources themselves present as legend.
A distinctive feature is its strong connection with the countryside and the begging: the farmers of the city and of the nearby villages gathered here in processions of concord to ask for rain. This tradition is maintained in the Labradores' Brotherhood, which celebrates in the square of the hermitage the feast of San Isidro on May 15, with religious acts and animal auctions. Located in the "Mirador de los Cuatro Vientos," the hermitage is also one of the great balconies on Soria and the Duero.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
