Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Meadow
Patrona de Casar de Cáceres
In the area of the Viñas de la Jara, a hermitage guards Santa María del Prado, patron of Casar de Cáceres; crowned in 1988, his "Day of the Cruces" pilgrimage brings together the whole town on Easter Monday.
Origin and history
The first documentary testimonies of the hermitage and the veneration of Santa María del Prado date from 1524; the temple was extended between the 16th and 18th centuries to its present basilical plant. The tradition dates back to a Marian intervention in a battle against the pillows about 1174, with the "Well of the Virgin"; a story of popular piety. It was canonically crowned on August 15, 1988.
The devotion is lived in two moments: the pilgrimage of the "Day of the Cross," on Easter Monday, when the people rise to the hermitage; and the ninth of September, when the image remains nine days in the parish before returning to its sanctuary on the last Sunday of the month.
