Our Lady of the Port

Plasency Pattern (Cáceres)

On the mountain of Valcorcero, on Plasencia, a Virgin of Milk is venerated as patron of the city; crowned in 1952, she congregates every Sunday of Cuasimodo a multitudinaria Romeria.

Lugar: Plasencia, Cáceres
Santuario: Santuario de la Virgen del Puerto (monte de Valcorchero)
Imagen: talla de la Virgen de la Leche
Coronada: 27 de abril de 1952 · Patrona de Plasencia

Origin and history

The devotion dates back to at least the 15th century, when the first hermitage was erected in Valcorkero; the present sanctuary is a rebuilding of the 18th century. The image is a size of a galactotrofuse type (Virgin of Milk). Declared patron of Plasencia by Saint Pius X and Honorary Mayor, it was canonically crowned on 27 April 1952.

His great feast is the Sunday of Cuasimodo, when thousands of placentines go up to the sanctuary. A legend attributes the title of "Port" to Christians who would have brought the image of the port of Lisbon, hiding it on the mountain; a story of popular piety, without documentary backing.

«Nuestra Señora del Puerto, patrona de Plasencia, ruega por nosotros.»
