Our Lady of Puy
Patrona de Estella-Lizarra (Navarra)
On the hill that dominates Estella, the basilica of the Puy keeps the patron of the city; its name and that of the villa itself - "Estella," star - evoke the tradition of the lights that are said to reveal the image.
Origin and history
The preserved image is a Gothic size of the 14th century. The present basilica is a modern temple built between 1930 and 1952, erected on the site of previous chapels on the top of the Puy hill, an urban and spiritual symbol of Estella.
Our Lady of the Puy is the patron of Estella, and her party is held on May 25, when she was canonically crowned in 1958. The tradition tells that about 1085 pastors of Abárzuza were guided by lights or stars to a grotto where they found the image; a foundational account that the local memory itself presents as a pious tradition, not as a documented fact.
