Our Lady of the Rest

Patron de Valverde del Camino (Huelva)

In Valverde del Camino, at the crossroads of roads, we have seen Our Lady of the Repose - the rest of the Virgin and St. Joseph in the flight to Egypt -, patron of the villa since 1672.

Origin and history

The Invocation of the Repose is interpreted as a biblical key as the rest of the Virgin and St. Joseph in the flight to Egypt, with the Child sleeping in the arms of Mary; local piety adds a reading linked to Valverde as "rest of the walker," because of its condition of crossing roads. The parish, under this advocation since ancient times, was built between the second half of the 16th century and the first decades of the 17th century, and was reformed after the earthquake of 1755.

According to local history, on August 8, 1672 the ecclesiastical and secular lobby declared the Virgin of the Repose a patron of Valverde and ordered to place her image on the main altar; the feast was fixed, since 1683, on September 12. Devotion is a sign of the identity of the village.
