Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Romero
Cascant (Navarra)
On the top of Cascante, united to the village by a monumental porticated gallery of 39 arches, the Romero Basilica has a venerated medieval size that only comes out in procession once every twenty-five years.
Origin and history
The present temple is a baroque building built between 1684 and 1693, on the ruins of a primitive 12th century Romanesque church destroyed by a fire. It is integrated with the monumental brick porticade gallery, 39 arches of half point, which rises from the urban centre to the Romero mountain, setting up one of the symbols of Cascante.
Inside is a rough and ancient medieval size, "the figure most venerated by the neighbors" and true sign of identity of the city. A very marked devotional feature is that the image is only taken in procession every twenty-five years, which highlights a cult of great respect and solemnity. The long arqueria favors a walking pilgrimage that forms part of the spiritual landscape of the villa.
Formal patronage and canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
