Our Lady of Salor
Patrona de Torrequemada (Cáceres)
Next to the Salor River, a Gothic-Mudejar hermitage documented since the 13th century keeps the patron of Torrequemada; a popular sanctuary, declared Good of Cultural Interest, with four romanies a year.
Origin and history
The place is first mentioned in a 1230 deslinde document, where the Virgin of Salor is already quoted. In 1345 his fellowship was founded, promoted by noble knights of Cáceres, who cared for the hermitage until 1519; then he went to the care of the people of Torrequemada. During the War of Independence the hermitage was almost destroyed and the original size was lost.
Devotion is characterized by its continuity from the Middle Ages and its strong Roman and regional dimension, with four annual Romeries; the hermitage is the spiritual and social center of the area. A legend reflects the typical apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd.
Own liturgical party and canonical coronation: they are not safely recorded in the sources.
