Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Valley
Toledo · the great Romeria of the Tajo
In front of the historic town of Toledo, on a hill on the left bank of the Tajo, the hermitage of the Virgin of the Valley is the goal of the greatest Romeria of the city, deeply rooted among the Toledans.
Origin and history
The hermitage of the Virgin of the Valley rises on a hill in front of Toledo, on the left bank of the Tajo River, in a place of great beauty from which the historic city is seen. The local chronicles witness a continued devotion and a very busy Romry, the largest of Toledo, which culminates in the procession of the image at the fall of the afternoon.
The devotion of the Valley lives in Toledo with the main patronage of the city, which corresponds to the Virgin of the Sagrarian in the cathedral. The precise dating of the hermitage and the image is not in detail in the accessible sources, but the Romeria del Valle is fully established as one of the great Marian and popular dating of the city.
The main patronage of the city (is the Virgin of the Sagrarian), the exact date of the Romeria, dating of the image and canonical coronation: they do not record with certainty in the sources.
