Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Viso
Patroness of the Land of Wine (Bamba, Zamora)
On the top of the Viso de Bamba, a sanctuary guards the patron of the Land of Wine; tradition links it to the apparition of the Virgin to a pastor in 1260 and to the finding of the remains of Saint Ildefonso and Saint Atilano.
Origin and history
The shrine of Santa Maria del Vero, on the high point of Bamba, is the center of devotion of the region of the Land of Wine. The tradition places the origin of the advocation in 1260, when the Virgin would have appeared to a pastor named Pascual, indicating the place where the remains of Saint Ildefonso and Saint Atilano were hidden; a story of the realm of the legend.
The sanctuary was a place of pilgrimage to which they went sick, and was linked to an ancient "Procession of Images," which was suppressed in 1773. Its most characteristic feature is the territorial link with the Land of Wine, whose peoples come in Romeria and make votes, especially on the Monday of Pentecost.
Canonical coronation: not found in the sources.
