Marian devotion
Where is he?
The place of Our Lady of Sunday is located in Saint-Bauzille-de-la-Sylve, department of Hérault, Occitania region, France. The coordinate points to the place cartographed by OpenStreetMap as EHPAD Notre Dame du Dimanche, next to the Route de l'Apparition. It is used as a verifiable reference of the whole and not as an affirmation of the exact point of the vineyard or of each of the narrated scenes.
Documented history
The diocese of Montpellier places the first story on Sunday, June 8, 1873. Auguste Arnaud, Saint- Bauzille- de-la-Sylve, worked in his vineyard when he claimed to have seen a woman in white in front of him. According to the account transmitted by the diocese, he asked in Occitan who he was and received the answer: "I am the Holy Virgin, be not afraid." The woman would have also talked about the vineyard disease, in a context in which agricultural diseases affected the region.
The diocesan source attributes to this first manifestation several concrete requests: to place a cross with a Virgin at the bottom of the vineyard, to organize an annual procession, to pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Grâce de Gignac and to make a mass. The same source places a second apparition on Tuesday, July 8, 1873. In it, the message transmitted insists on not working on Sunday and on going in procession to Notre-Dame de Grâce. These elements are presented as the content of witness and devotion, not as an independent transcription made by us.
After an investigation, the Bishop of Montpellier, Anatole of Cabrières, recognized the apparitions in 1879 and approved the devotion to Our Lady of Sunday, according to the diocese itself. The sanctuary was attached to the local pastoral life and preserves the memory of Auguste Arnaud. A diocesan booklet of the Jubilee of 2025 mentions a small white chapel, the seer's tomb, the pilgrimages of June 8 and July 8, the Mass, the reconciliation, the formation and the prayer of the Rosary.
Tradition
Tradition retains the words attributed to Our Lady about Sunday rest, procession and prayer. It also recalls the gesture of placing a cross with an image in the vineyard. The current practice of going to the place, celebrating the Eucharist, confessing and praying the Rosary belongs to the life of pilgrimage documented by the diocese. Devotion invites us to honor Mary and to ask her intercession before Jesus Christ, not to worship an image or the place.
Legend
The expression "vineyard disease" has received a spiritual interpretation: in addition to agricultural difficulties, tradition understands it as a call to care for the inner life and the day of the Lord. That reading belongs to the devotional reception of the message. The fact sheet does not convert every detail of the visions into historical data, nor does it state extraordinary cures that are not reflected in the diocesan documentation consulted.
Ecclesial State
The diocese of Montpellier states that in 1879 Bishop Anatole of Cabrières recognized the apparitions and approved the devotion to Our Lady of Sunday. This record is therefore recorded. aprobada in the diocesan field, with the date of recognition indicated by the source. There is no papal approval: the source used documents the act of the Bishop of Montpellier.
Anecdotes and stories
The sanctuary retains the tomb of Auguste Arnaud and a chapel open to visitors. The celebrations of June 8 and July 8 link the calendar to the two dates transmitted by the diocese. The Jubilee brochure describes the place as a welcome for believers or non-believers, with commented tours and moments of prayer. It is a simple memory, linked to a vineyard and to the life of a people, which continues in the local pastoral.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Our Lady of Sunday, intercedes before your Son for our families, for those who work the earth, for those who need rest and for those who have lost hope. Teach us to live Sunday as the day of God, of the family, of mercy and of prayer, with respect for those who are in difficulties. Amen.
The message transmitted and the life of the place
The diocesan page retains other details of the second date. El 8 de julio, según el narración, la Virgen habría pedido no trabajar el Domingo y habría invitado a recuentrar en procesión a Notre-Dame de Grâce de Gignac. The first request to place a cross with an image at the bottom of the vineyard gave the place a visible signal that still forms part of its memory. It is not said that each word can be rebuilt as a recording: what the diocese transmits about the testimonies is cited.
The agricultural context is also important. Auguste Arnaud was a vineyard worker and the reference to "vineyard disease" appeared in a time of difficulty for the crops. The subsequent spiritual reception understood the message as a call not to let work and economic concerns move away from prayer and Sunday rest. This pastoral interpretation does not replace the history of the diseases of the vine and does not allow any agricultural event to be attributed to the apparition.
The diocese includes the place between its pilgrimage spaces and the Jubilee brochure describes a simple reception: small chapel, tomb of Auguste Arnaud, celebrations, sacrament of reconciliation, formation and Rosary. The anniversary is not reduced to remembering an extraordinary phenomenon; it brings together the community to listen to the Word, celebrate Christ and ask, through Mary's intercession, for the strength to live the faith in the daily.
