Our Lady of Fire of Forlì (Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The image of Madonna del Fuoco is venerated in the cathedral of Santa Croce de Forlì, in Emilia-Romaña (Italy). The point of the map corresponds to the cathedral building identified by OpenStreetMap; it does not intend to point out the classroom of the old school where the image was found in 1428.

Documented history

Vatican News describes the image as a xylography on paper, glued and nailed to a wooden board. The source relates to a work prior to 1420, although the author and the exact provenance do not record; it is traditionally linked to a teacher named Lombardino da Riopetroso and probably to a circle of Boloña artists.

The same source places a fire on the night of February 4-5, 1428, at a school in Forlì. After the fire, the image was found without apparent damage between the remains and taken in procession to the cathedral. The existence of the fire, the transfer and the preservation of the image are part of the historical and cultual memory transmitted by the diocese and the city; there is no modern expert report or a separate decree that judges the fact supernatural.

Tradition

The devotional tradition states that the xylography remained intact, without burning or blackening by the smoke, while burning the building. That's why he got the name Madonna of the Fuoco. The population began to come to it in times of war, epidemics, calamities and disease, asking for Mary's intercession before God.

Legend and limits of the record

The word "miracle" belongs to the way the community tells the preservation of the image. It is preserved here as a religious tradition, not an independent conclusion. There is no such thing as an apparition of Mary associated with the fire: the core of the story is a venerated image that, according to tradition, survived the fire.

Ecclesial State

It is a public Catholic cult in the Cathedral of Forlì and the veneration of Madonna del Fuoco as the patron of the city. It is therefore recorded, permitted veneration. This state describes the public and legitimate existence of devotion; it does not claim that the Church has declared the fire or the extraordinary preservation of xylography supernatural.

Anecdotes and stories

Devotion remains part of the calendar and life of Forlì. Vatican News recalls the prayer of several potatoes before the image, including Pius VI, Pius VII, Pius IX and John Paul II. He also describes the "fiorite," in which children offer drawings and flowers, and the procession that the bishop carried out for the city during the 2020 confinement. They are documented expressions of a living devotion, not added evidence of the origin of the phenomenon.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, intercedes for the cities that pass through trials and for those who live in fear, disease or uncertainty. Teach us to preserve the faith and to help others with concrete works. Amen.

Art and memory of devotion

The xilography brings together several scenes and religious figures: the Virgin with the Child is accompanied, according to the description of Vatican News, by the sun, the moon, scenes of the Annunciation and the Crucifixion, as well as apostles and saints. The piece is not just an object associated with a fire: its composition allows us to approach the visual catechesis of the time and the way a community learned to contemplate Mary next to the mystery of Christ.

The history of the image has also intertwined with the city's collective evidence. Prayer before her during wars, epidemics and diseases explains the continuity of devotion without the need to attribute an extraordinary intervention to each visit. Marian veneration is understood here as a request for intercession: worship corresponds to God.

Dates and gestures of a living devotion

The Vatican News chronicle conserves several dates that help place devotion in the history of Forlì. According to the head of social communication of the diocese cited by the source, Pius VI prayed before the image in 1782, when he was travelling to Vienna; Pius VII did so in 1814, after his captivity in France during the Napoleonic period; and Pius IX stopped before it during his visit in 1857. John Paul II paid him tribute on May 8, 1986. These visits document the pastoral and civic importance of the image, but they are not a pronunciation about the extraordinary nature of the 1428 fire.

The same source describes the flowering as a gesture in which children bring drawings and flowers to the column dedicated to the Madonna of Fuoco. During the pandemic, health measures changed the way to participate: instead of a concentration, work was deposited with the cathedral. On April 19, 2020, Bishop Livio Corazza carried the image in a solitary procession through the historical center. The scene shows how a tradition can adapt to a collective test without the adaptation becoming a miracle test.

The fire, image and papal visits belong to layers other than memory. The existence of devotion and its celebrations can be affirmed by the sources gathered; the interpretation of the image "unharmed" as a miracle is maintained in the field of tradition, because this documentation does not contain an expert opinion or a specific decree of supernatural.
