Nuestra Señora de Gostyń (Głogógko, Polonia)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The shrine of Our Lady of Gostyń, locally known as Święta Góra and dedicated to the Duchowna Rose, is in Głogówko, next to Gostyń, in the voivodship of Great Poland. The coordinate of this file identifies the town of Głogówko returned by OpenStreetMap; it is kept with location accuracy because the proven cartographic source does not allow to state that the point is the exact building of the basilica. The sanctuary is entrusted to the Congregation of the Oratory of San Felipe Neri.

Documented history

The story published by the sanctuary places Święta Góra in a landscape with very old forms of veneration. The excavations carried out in 1910 found remains of an incineration cemetery, an archaeological data that documents the religious antiquity of the place. The interpretation that the first evangelizers Christianized an elevation already considered sacred is presented as a historical possibility of the sanctuary itself, not as a fact shown in all its details.

In the Modern Age, a first chapel was raised to attend to pilgrims who came to the Marian image. The official history recalls that in the early 16th century the owners of Gostyń asked the bishop of Poznań to examine the graces that were spoken of. This examination belongs to the history of veneration and shows that devotion had a public dimension; it does not allow to state that every healing preserved in the memory of the place has been recognized as a canon miracle.

The presence of the Philippians became a stable center of prayer, formation and pilgrimage. The Baroque church and the monastery form an artistic ensemble of great importance for the region. The very history of the sanctuary recalls that the temple was thought of as a space capable of gathering liturgy, music, preaching and reception of pilgrims. During the Second World War the community was dispersed and the original image was hidden, while the buildings were used by the occupying forces; after the war the religious returned and restored the life of the place.

Tradition

The tradition of Święta Góra speaks of extraordinary graces received by those who prayed before the image and kept stories of healing. The fact sheet respects that memory within popular devotion. It does not present these accounts as medical evidence or as an individual supernatural approval, because the verified sources for this lot do not provide a complete file for each case.

Legend and limits of the record

There is no Marian apparition associated with this sanctuary that has been subjected to a specific canonical judgment. The antiquity of the place, the beauty of the basilica, the coronation of the image and the influx of pilgrims describe the historical and ecclesial reality of veneration; they must not be transformed into a foundational legend that sources do not demonstrate.

Ecclesial State

The state is stated as permitted veneration. The Archdiocese of Poznań includes Gostyń-Święta Góra among its Marian shrines crowned by papal authority and records the coronation of the image in June 1928. The history of the sanctuary dates the celebration on June 25, while the archdiocesan list records it on June 24; the difference is recorded without inventing a solution. Coronation recognizes public veneration and does not amount to declaring a supernatural apparition.

Anecdotes and stories

The life of the sanctuary unites a Marian image, the Baroque architecture and the musical tradition of the Philippians. The official history also recalls the use of the monastery as a house of exercises and retreats after the war. Thus, the pilgrimage is not reduced to asking for favors: it includes confession, listening to the Word, celebration of the Eucharist, formation and prayer of intercession.

Prayer

St. Mary, Rosa de Święta Góra, pray for those who seek God in prayer and for those who need comfort. Teach us to receive thanks with humility, to discern with truth and to follow Jesus Christ with charity. Amen.

The life of the sanctuary and the continuity of veneration

The official history recalls that in 1962 John XXIII sent a blessing to the Congregation and to the devotees of the image, and described Święta Góra as a kind of second sanctuary after Częstochowa on Polish lands. The mention belongs to the history of the ecclesial reception of the place and is not used to attribute to the image a supernatural category different from the one that consists. In 1965 the Holy See approved the feast of Our Lady of Święta Góra, initially held on 5 October and moved after 25 June. This data also refers to liturgy and public worship.

The Philippine sanctuary thus retains a double dimension. On the one hand, it keeps a Marian image and a basilica in which the prayer of the pilgrims is celebrated. On the other hand, it maintains a house of exercises and retreats that extends the pastoral mission of the community after the war. Music, preaching and reception are not ornaments separated from devotion: they are part of the concrete way in which the community directs Mary's veneration to Christ and to the sacramental life of the Church.

The 1928 coronation is inserted into this long story. The source of the sanctuary is located on June 25, while the record of the archdiocese is recorded on June 24; both sources coincide in the year and in the public nature of the act. The discrepancy is maintained because a responsible data sheet should not choose an exact date, ignoring that the institutional sources consulted do not match. What is clear is that the image was crowned by papal authority and that the sanctuary continues to be recognized by the local Church.
