Our Lady of Graces of Udine (Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Basilica- Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Graces is at Piazza Primo Maggio de Udine, in Friul- Venice Julia (Italy). The coordinate corresponds to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap. The Archdiocese of Udine presents it as a sanctuary located in the center of the city and entrusted to the Servites of Mary.

Documented history

The diocesan information places the arrival of the Marian icon in 1479 and describes the sanctuary as a 15th century foundation raised on an ancient oratory. The procession and the expansion of the place responded to the influx of faithful attracted by the image of the Virgin with the Child. The new church was built and developed during the following centuries, until it formed the ensemble that today presides over the square.

The artistic and devotional history of the building is recognized in its neoclassical facade, the portico for pilgrims, frescoes and exvotes. The archdiocese records that the icon guarded in the sanctuary remains a reference point for the inhabitants of Udine. The care of the place and the regular celebration of the liturgy document a living institution, not an automatic affirmation that each grace attributed to the image is a recognized miracle.

Tradition

The tradition of the city identifies the icon as an image coming from the East and preserved since 1479. Devotion invokes it as a protective and comforting image, especially when the community faces wars, epidemics, suffering or uncertainty. The Christian request is addressed to God and asks Mary for intercession; the veneration of the image is not the worship of a creature.

Legend and limits of the record

The ancient expressions about a "miraculous image" belong to the language of devotion and the history of the reception of the icon. The sources consulted do not contain a file that allows each healing or protection account to be converted into a recognized individual miracle. It is also not an apparition here: the center of the tab is a venerated icon and an urban sanctuary with historical continuity.

Ecclesial State

Consta permitted veneration. The Archdiocese recognizes the sanctuary as a place of worship and pilgrimage, reports its times and links it to the pastoral care of the Servants of Mary. The state refers to the public veneration of the Virgin of Graces and does not affirm a supernatural approval of all the accounts associated with the image.

Anecdotes and stories

The community of Udine has come to the sanctuary in times of difficulty. The diocesan documentation recalls, for example, the city's prayer to the image during an epidemic and the continuity of the pleas in the liturgical calendar. Today the sanctuary offers Masses, confessions and Rosary; its daily activity makes visible a tradition that is not locked in the past, but is expressed in the ordinary prayer of the faithful.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, comforting those who suffer, intercede through the city of Udine and through all the communities that pass through trials. Take us to Christ, true hope, and teach us to turn prayer into concrete help. Amen.

The icon and the life of the city

The location in Piazza Primo Maggio places the sanctuary in the heart of Udine. It is not a remote enclosure: the image is part of the urban memory and daily prayer of the city. The arrival of the icon in 1479, the construction of the sanctuary and the continued presence of the Servants of Mary explain that generations of inhabitants have found there confession, Eucharist, Rosary and spiritual accompaniment.

The simple architecture of the facade and the portico contrasts with the richness of the frescoes, the votive decorations and the altar where the image is kept. These elements are material sources for the history of veneration. An exvote documents that a person wanted to thank a grace; it is not enough for himself to establish the medical or supernatural cause of what happened. The fact sheet retains that difference so that the history of the sanctuary is not reduced to a collection of impossible claims.

Memory, prayer and discernment

The diocesan sources relate the sanctuary to moments of collective difficulty, including epidemics and wars. The community came to the image to ask for help and intercession. In Catholic language, this plea does not replace trust in God or human responsibility: to ask Mary to intercede can live together with the care of the sick, solidarity and care of the city.

The tab also does not attribute an apparition to the icon. The name "of graces" expresses a relationship of trust and gratitude, while public veneration describes a recognized devotion in the life of the archdiocese. If a specific decree on a miracle or the origin of the image appeared in the future, it could be added with its source. In the meantime, the responsibility is to affirm what it does consist of: an icon venerated since the end of the 15th century, an active Catholic sanctuary and an urban tradition that continues.
