Marian devotion
Where is he?
The image known as Our Lady of Jólm or Virgin of Chełm is currently preserved at the Volinia Icon Museum in Lutsk, Ukraine. The museum is on 5 Tymoshenka Street and is part of the Volinia Regional Museum. The piece is a Byzantine icon venerated by Christians of different traditions and should not be confused with a modern Marian apparition.
The map uses 50.7481, 25.3312, coordinates of the museum building identified in OpenStreetMap (way 767692806). The precision is verified_building: the point locates the museum that conserves the icon, not the historical place of origin of the image or an exact interior position of the cult room.
Documented history
The fact sheet of the Volinia Icon Museum describes the image as a piece of Byzantine art usually dated between the 11th and 12th centuries, although historical-artistic dating appears discussed in the literature. It also documents the current conservation in Lutsk and the importance of the work within the museum's collections. The first written mention and historical displacements belong to a complex history, marked by wars, border changes and different Christian communities.
The source of the Catholic diocese of Lutsk recalls a first written reference to the icon in 1259 and relates its history to the old city of Chełm. These data are presented as information transmitted by the ecclesial source, not as proof that all episodes of tradition have been independently tested. The material conservation of the icon and its current presence in the museum are the strongest points for this tab.
The Volinia Icon Museum was created in 1993 and brings together works of sacred art from the region. The presence of the Virgin of Jólm in a museum institution allows us to study simultaneously its artistic dimension, its historical journey and its devotional use. A museum does not eliminate veneration: in this case, the diocese points out that in the face of the image there are occasionally held offices and that visitors can pray in the sala-chapel.
Tradition
Tradition links the image to the old cathedral of Chełm and the Christian history of Volinia. The attribution to the evangelist Luke belongs to the iconographic legend extended around many Marian images and is not presented here as demonstrated authorship. It is also said that the image was moved by Prince Daniel of Galitzia; the diocesan source retains that memory, but the fact sheet distinguishes the traditional account from the material evidence that can be examined today.
The icon has historically been related to Orthodox, Catholic and Greek-Catholic Christians. This shared trajectory is important: it should not be exclusively appropriated for a single community or the changes in custody that accompanied the history of the region should be deleted. The veneration of the image directs prayer to God and asks for the intercession of Mary; it does not turn the object into a divinity or replace Christ.
Legend and limits of the record
Devotional narrations attribute miracles to the icon, protection in times of war and thanks received by those who pray before it. The existence of veneration and the memory of these graces is documented; a modern Catholic file that autentifies each given miracle is not recorded in the coined sources. That is why "miraculous" or "sacred" expressions are used as the language of tradition and the institutions that venerate it, not as a universal certification of all accounts.
Conservation in Lutsk also does not mean that the icon had been painted there. The name Jólm / Chełm retains the relationship with its historical trajectory. The marker points to the current place of custody and prayer, while the tab explains that the origin and displacements of the image belong to a broader and partially discussed history.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted veneration in the sense of a public veneration documented in the face of an image preserved in a museum that has a prayer room and to which occasional offices are held. The label does not affirm an approved apparition or a pronunciation of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on every traditional miracle. The history of the icon is shared by Eastern and Western communities, so this Christian plurality is expressly identified.
Anecdotes and stories
One of the most striking features of the Virgin of Jólm is that the image was not reduced to a piece without memory after its movements. The museum retains the object, offers a framework for its study and maintains a space in which visitors can pray. Thus there are three dimensions that should not be confused: the artistic work, the historical biography of the icon and the living devotion.
The regional history of the image includes travel and changes of custody between Jerusalem, Constantinople, Kyiv, Chełm, Lopolis, Lublin, Warsaw and Lutsk, according to the tradition of the diocesan source. The list helps to understand the symbolic depth of the icon, but the details of each transfer must continue to be treated with the degree of certainty that historical sources allow.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of God, intercedes before the Lord for Ukraine, for Volinia and for all peoples who have suffered wars and displacements. Teach us to guard the memory with truth, to respect each Christian Church and to walk towards Jesus Christ with hope. Amen.
