Our Lady of La Vang (Vietnam)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Vang is located in the current Vietnamese province of Quņng Trő, in the area of Hħi Lăng. The point of the map corresponds to the minor basilica and the shrine enclosure cartographed by OpenStreetMap. The fact sheet brings together in one entry the memory of the traditional apparition and the documented history of the sanctuary, because it is the same seat; they are not two different places.

Documented history

The history of La Vang is linked to the persecution of Vietnamese Catholics of the late 18th century. In 1798, the shrine of Hureza placed the flight of the faithful to the forests of the area, but it also warned that the exact day of the manifestations that tradition related to that refuge cannot be fixed with certainty. The chronological reconstruction depends on testimonies transmitted and collected about a century after the events.

What is historically clear is the continuity of the community and the cult. In 1886 it was decided to build a chapel and the church was opened in 1901 before a large concentration of pilgrims. The sanctuary became a center of Vietnamese Catholic life, and the church was extended in 1928. The war caused the destruction of the temple in 1972; the memory of the place, however, did not disappear.

In 1961, the bishops of South Vietnam recognized La Vang as a national Marian centre and John XXIII raised his church to the lower basilica on August 22 of that year. In 1980, bishops from all over Vietnam renewed national recognition. John Paul II recalled the sanctuary by canonizing the 117 Vietnamese martyrs in 1988 and expressed his desire that it be rebuilt. These data describe the ecclesial recognition of the sanctuary and its veneration; they do not in themselves constitute a decree on the supernatural of apparition.

Tradition

Tradition tells that Mary manifested herself to the refugees while praying the rosary, accompanied by the Child Jesus and two angels. According to the report, he offered them comfort and taught them to use local plants to relieve their diseases. The image of persecuted Christians who pray together under the trees explains the place of La Vang in the Catholic memory of Vietnam.

Tradition also retains the custom of meeting to pray every night. It is a significant devotional element, but it does not appear as a preserved contemporary chronicle. The history of the sanctuary, the pilgrimage and the life of the faithful can be documented more safely than the exact date and details of the supernatural account.

Legend and limits of the record

The literary words attributed to Mary and the concrete identification of a medicinal plant belong to later devotional versions. There is no coetanea chronicle to verify each sentence, each witness or every extraordinary detail. Nor has a decree declared the apparition of 1798 to be supernatural in the cross-cutting sources.

Ecclesial State

Se consigna veneration _ permitted to express that there is public Catholic worship, national sanctuary and minor basilica documented. The ecclesial recognition of the sanctuary does not here become an approval of the supernatural apparition. The fact sheet deliberately distinguishes between documented history, tradition and legend. Mary's veneration leads to Christ and is understood as intercession; worship corresponds only to God.

Anecdotes and stories

The celebration of the two-hundredth anniversary in 1998, according to the sources cited in the report, brought together tens of thousands of faithful, with estimates ranging from 70,000 to 100,000. The figure is not used as an exact census, but as an indication of the national dimension of the pilgrimage. The destruction of the temple during the war and the subsequent desire to rebuild it show how the sanctuary also became a memory of the perseverance of Vietnamese Catholics.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, accompanies those who pilgrim the Vang and those who suffer persecution or fear. Teach us to pray with perseverance, to care for the sick and to remain united with your Son. Pray for the Church of Vietnam and for all those who seek comfort. Amen.

Historical context and prudence

The importance of The Vang does not depend on turning every detail of tradition into a historical affirmation. The persecution, the refuge of the faithful, the construction of the chapel and the continuity of the pilgrimage form a sufficiently documented sequence. On that basis it is understood that generations of Vietnamese Catholics have read the place as a memory of comfort in times of fear. The apparition, on the other hand, belongs to a later transmitted tradition and must preserve the prudent language of the sources.

It is also appropriate to distinguish the institutional recognition of the scope of the investigation on extraordinary facts. May a church be a minor basilica or may the bishops recognize it as a national center describes its place in the life of the Church and its public veneration. It does not in itself prove that each associated vision, word or healing has been declared supernatural. This separation protects both the historical truth and the dignity of the devotion of the pilgrims.

The map uses the cartographed building of the basilica. It does not aim to resolve the different locations that tradition can attribute to refugees or to point out the exact point of a particular tree, plant or scene. When the historical source leaves a date or circumstance open, the tab also leaves it open. To say "no record" is here a form of respect for the facts and those who visit the sanctuary.
