Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes of Agbenoxoe is next to Kpando, in the Volta Region of Ghana, within the diocese of Ho. The pastoral page of the site is located on the Kpando-Nkonya road, about three kilometres from the Kpando post office. OpenStreetMap offers a reference of the town of Kpando; therefore the marker has precision locality and does not intend to point out the inside of the grotto.
Documented history
The story published by the Grotto itself indicates that a priest and faithful from Kpando pilgrimaged to Lourdes and decided to build a similar place in Ghana. Construction began in 1951. On 11 February 1957, Monsignor Anthony Konings, then bishop of the diocese of Keta, consecrated the Grotto to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God. The page also recalls the further development of the enclosure and the installation of stations of the Via Cruces.
In 2022, the diocese of Ho entrusted the pastoral care of the parish and the Grotto to the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. In 2025 Bishop Emmanuel Kofi Fianu presided over the blessing of a chapel of worship next to the grotto. These references document a continued pastoral life and the relationship of the place with the diocese, but they do not allow to claim that there is a local apparition or a recognized miracle.
The grotto and the pilgrimage
The site page describes the grotto as the center of pilgrimage and prayer. He also mentions the Feast of the Assumption and the Solemnity of the Immaculate as moments of special influx. The enclosure has a statue of Mary and prayer stations. Catholic devotion vents the Virgin and asks her to intercede before Jesus Christ; she does not attribute divine power to stone, image or geographical point.
The blessing of a chapel of worship refers to the Eucharistic presence and prayer of the Church. It does not amount to the approval of a Marian supernatural phenomenon. The tab keeps both realities together without confusing them.
Tradition and limits
The memory of the journey to Lourdes, the community building and the arrival of pilgrims belong to the history and tradition of the place according to the sources consulted. There is no ecclesial narrative of apparition in Agbenoxoe. Nor does it contain a list of recognized miracles or cures. The stories that can be circulated between pilgrims must be maintained as testimony or tradition until there is a source that establishes them as facts.
Ecclesial State
The grotto is integrated into a parish and the diocese of Ho, and its consecration and pastoral care are documented. Registered permitted veneration for the place of prayer and pilgrimage. There is no specific pronunciation on supernatural; therefore, the tab does not present the local advocation as an approved apparition.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of God, accompanies the pilgrims of Agbenoxoe and the Church of Ghana. Take us to Jesus Christ, teach us to pray with perseverance and make every visit to this cave grow in charity, truth and service. Amen.
