Our Lady of Lourdes of Pallikkunnu (India)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, called Lourdu Matha Shrine, is located in Pallikkunnu, North Wayanad, Kerala, India. The Archdiocese of Calicut explicitly identifies it as a sanctuary and publishes the direction of the church, its contact details and its mass schedules. The point of this tab has been left to location accuracy: OpenStreetMap identifies Pallikunnu as a town of Wayanad, but no unambiguous geometry of the shrine building has been found.

Documented history

The present existence of the sanctuary and its belonging to the Archdiocese of Calicut are documented on the diocesan page of Lourdu Matha Shrine. The archdiocese also includes it in the outsider of Wayanad North along with other parishes and chapels of the area. In his own news he reported on the celebration of the 112th parish anniversary together with the feast of the Nativity of Mary. This data documents the continuity of a community and its religious calendar; it is not used to invent a founding year that does not accurately record in available sources.

The name of Lourdes places devotion in the Catholic tradition of Marian advocation born in Lourdes, France. Pallikkunnu is a different place: its church and community maintain a local cult and should not be confused with the French grotto or other Lourdes churches in Kerala. The presence of an image, a grotto or a party dedicated to Lourdes does not automatically turn the place into a stage of an independent apparition.

Devotion and pastoral life

The page of the Archdiocese publishes the hours of Sunday Mass and the celebrations of working days, as well as the ninth and worship of Saturday. These data show a concrete and verifiable pastoral life. Pilgrims can go to pray, ask for Mary's intercession and participate in the sacraments; the fact sheet does not give these practices a guarantee of healing or present particular testimonies as proven facts.

Tradition and Legend

There is no local Marian apparition in Pallikkunnu or an individual miracle account with published canonical judgment in the diocesan sources consulted. If popular devotion conserves favors, promises or cures, they must be described as testimonies of the faithful until sufficient documentation exists. The history of the sanctuary is limited here to what the Archdiocese attests: the church, its location, its pastoral belonging and its community celebration.

Ecclesial State

The sanctuary has permitted veneration as a Catholic church and center of prayer integrated in the Archdiocese of Calicut. "Permitted Veneration" does not mean that there is an approval of an apparition. For Pallikkunnu there is no diocesan declaration of supernatural, a no obstat specific or formal rejection: the state of an extraordinary unpronounced phenomenon should not be confused with the recognition of the sanctuary as a place of worship.

Anecdotes and stories

The celebration of the parish anniversary along with the Nativity of Mary shows how the community unites the liturgical calendar with the memory of the sanctuary. The published hours of mass, ninth and worship allow anyone who visits the place to know their ordinary life. This pastoral normality is valuable in itself: the fact sheet does not need to be filled with unverified miracles to reflect the existence of the church and devotion.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus and comfort of the sick, pray for Pallikkunnu, for the Archdiocese of Calicut and for those who participate there in prayer. He accompanies those who suffer and teaches us to discern with humility the testimonies, always seeking truth and charity. Amen.

Sources

The community of Pallikkunnu

The diocesan page publishes three Sunday masses and masses on working days, as well as ninth and adoration on Saturdays. They are not ornamental data: they show that Lourdu Matha Shrine is an active community, with a concrete pastoral rhythm. The news of the parish anniversary links the life of the church to the Nativity of Mary and to the attention of the elderly of the parish. They are made of ecclesial life that can be counted without giving them a miraculous character.

The fact sheet does not set a founding date from a geographical inference. The research report was about a celebration of the 112th anniversary in 2019, but the diocesan source consulted is not enough to rebuild all the steps in the history of the building alone. This is why the data is kept as news of parish continuity and left "no record" where there is no unambiguous chronology.

The OpenStreetMap ratio used for the map identifies the location of Pallikunnu in Wayanad and returns a representative position of the core. By not finding an unequivocal OSM point of the sanctuary, the tab expressly declares the accuracy locality. This caution avoids presenting as an exact building a coordinate that only allows to place the area.

Discernment and location

Lourdes' invocation helps the community to pray with a Marian tradition spread by many countries. In Pallikkunnu, however, the fact sheet is limited to affirming what can be proven: there is a diocesan sanctuary, the archdiocese includes it in its pastoral organization and the community celebrates the liturgy and the ninth. A new apparition, a miraculous image and a well-known healing are not affirmed because none of this is in the ecclesial sources consulted.
