Marian devotion

The Seongmodang of Daegu was born of a promise. When Daegu's new Catholic constituency was just beginning, his first bishop entrusted to Our Lady of Lourdes three needs that seemed difficult to meet. When they were fulfilled, he raised a Marian grotto, which since 1918 has remained a spiritual heart and symbol of the Archdiocese.

A newly born diocese
The apostolic vicariate of Daegu was separated from Joseon's jurisdiction on April 8, 1911. On July 2, the French bishop, Florian Demange, elected Our Lady of Lourdes as the patron and entrusted Mary with the future of the new local Church.
There were three urgent works: building an episcopal residence, founding a seminary and expanding the cathedral. Demange promised that if they could be realized, he would dedicate to the Virgin the most beautiful place from which Daegu would be seen and reproduce the Grotto of Massabielle there.
The three requests fulfilled
By 1917 the three companies had come to a successful conclusion. The bishop interpreted this advance as a grace received and began to fulfill his promise. The grotto was modeled by reference to Lourdes; the set of brick surrounding it was also inspired by the reproduction of Lourdes raised by León XIII in the Vatican gardens.
On October 13, 1918, the blessing was celebrated. The Latin phrase was entered on the grotto: 1911 EX IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONI 1918, that is, "by a vote to the Immaculate Conception," between the years of promise and its fulfillment.
Lourdes and the Immaculate Conception
The two titles don't compete. In Lourdes, Mary presented herself to Saint Bernardite as the Immaculate Conception; therefore the doctrinal inscription and the form of the grotto express the same devotion. Water, penance, prayer for sinners and attention to the sick are the spiritual horizon of the place.
Daegu's work is not intended to reproduce a Korean apparition. It is a devotional replica and a votive monument that links the local Church with the French sanctuary and with the faith of the universal Church.
A century of diocesan prayer
Since May 1973, the nights of Mary are celebrated there in an outstanding way. The compound hosts masses, ordinations, diocesan meetings and pilgrimages. St. Teresa of Calcutta and John Paul II are among those who visited the place.
The grotto became so representative that the archdiocese took its silhouette as a central element of its graphic identity. It is not only an ancient construction: it symbolizes a Church that remembers the graces received and responds faithfully.
San Juan Yi-il
In 1987, the relics of John Yi Yun-il, martyr and second patron of the archdiocese were deposited under the altar. They were later transferred to the memorial of the martyrs of Gwandeokjeong. That stage left the Seongmodang attached to the martyrdom memory of Daegu.
The historical presence of the martyr helps to understand the spirituality of the sanctuary: the protection of Mary does not eliminate all evidence, but supports fidelity to Christ and accompanies the Church in her mission.
Verified location
The Archdiocese and the Episcopal Conference publish the address 112 Namsan-ro 4-gil. OpenStreetMap individually identifies the grotto as the hue of the hue by the polygon 684526945. The marker 35.8610734, 128.5862475 (WGS-84) corresponds to the center of the structure and not to the cathedral or the general centre of Daegu.
Prayer to Our Lady of Lourdes of Daegu
Our Lady of Lourdes, Mother Immaculate venerated in Daegu, teach us to acknowledge with gratitude the graces received and to faithfully fulfill our promises. It protects seminarians, priests, families and the sick. May the witness of the martyrs strengthen our faith and may every work undertaken in your name lead to Jesus. Amen.
