Marian devotion
Where is he?
The shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes is located in Villianur, in the territory of Puducherry, India. The very page of the sanctuary identifies it as Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Villianur, Pondicherry. The point indicated corresponds to the cartographed place of the church and does not intend to locate the interior of an image, the pond or a devotional experience.
Documented history
The story published by the sanctuary places the project of a chapel in 1867, when the missionaries of the foreign missions of Paris in Puducherry wanted to raise in Villianur a place dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. The institutional tradition recalls that the image reached the region in the 19th century and that the church was growing as a center of prayer and pilgrimage. The fact sheet retains the distinction between these historical data and the accounts of cures associated with devotion.
According to the history of the sanctuary itself, the archbishop received on February 21, 1886 permission to declare the official sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes and to coronically coronically the image. The same source dates the solemn act of coronation and public declaration on 8 May 1886. This is an institutional statement about the sanctuary and the image; it is not used to affirm a new apparition in Villianur, because the advocation refers to Lourdes, France.
Tradition and devotion
The sanctuary retains a sacred pond and a life of pilgrimage linked to prayer before the image. The historical page presents the water and the visits of the faithful within the religious memory of the place. The existence of the pond, of the church and of the celebrations can be documented; the specific cures attributed to the intercession of Mary must remain as particular testimonies when there is no canonical judgment on them.
Legend and limits of the record
There is no independent Marian apparition in Villianur. The sanctuary is born as a local expression of devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes and should not be geographically confused with the Grotto of Lourdes. The extraordinary stories that circulate among pilgrims are presented as tradition or testimony, without turning them into recognized miracles or adding dates that sources do not bring.
Ecclesial State
The very history of the sanctuary documents the public declaration of the place and the coronation of the image in 1886. So this tab identifies the place as permitted veneration and explains the coronation as an ecclesial act of the image, without extending that data to an approval of local supernatural phenomena. There is no independent judgment on every extraordinary healing or account in the sources consulted.
Anecdotes and stories
The annual organization of the feast and the ninth one keeps the sanctuary attached to the life of Puducherry. The pond and the image of Lourdes form a devotional set of Villianur, while the reference to Lourdes retains its French origin. Local history also recalls walking pilgrimages and other community practices; they are included here as customs of devotion, not as evidence of supernatural.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus and comfort of the sick, pray for those who come to Villianur seeking hope. Help us to care for those who suffer, to carefully discern the testimonies and to put all our trust in God. Amen.

The sanctuary and the life of the pilgrims
The history of the sanctuary presents Villianur as a place raised in relation to devotion born in Lourdes after 1858. The chapel planned in 1867 and the solemn declaration of 1886 show how an international devotion was received in the context of Puducherry. The website itself states that the temple was one of the first dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes outside of France; this formulation is preserved as an institutional affirmation of the sanctuary, without making it a larger data than the source can demonstrate.
The pond is an important place in the visitor's experience. The image installed in its surroundings and devotional use of water are part of Villianur's memory. However, it is appropriate not to call each given cure miraculous or to present water as a medical treatment. The Church can accompany the prayer of the sick and discern testimonies, but this fact sheet does not contain a public record that declares each individual case supernatural.
The 1886 coronation refers to the venerated image in Villianur and the pontifical authorization communicated by institutional history. It does not mean that Villianur is the geographical place of the Lourdes apparitions or that there is an independent apparition there. The difference between a crowned image, a recognized sanctuary and an approved supernatural apparition is essential to read the Marian heritage with precision.
The novenas, the annual feast and the walking pilgrimages belong to the life of the community. They can inspire a simple prayer of intercession: to ask Mary to accompany those who suffer and to lead them to Christ. This prayer respects Catholic doctrine and avoids confusing veneration with worship.
The memory of Villianur in Puducherry
The sanctuary is located near Puducherry and is part of a broader missionary history, in which local communities received and made their own forms of prayer and art from Europe. The advocation of Lourdes is expressed here with parties, novies, pilgrimages and care of the temple. The continuity of these practices makes it possible to speak of a living devotion, although it does not allow to fill in with unknown data the exact chronology of each work, of each image or of each healing.
The institutional source calls the image "miraculous" within its devotional language. This fact sheet does not make that adjective a judgment on all extraordinary facts. The coronation of 1886, the declaration of the sanctuary and the liturgical celebration are ecclesial facts other than the discernment of apparitions or cures. Keeping these categories separate helps to respect both the faith of pilgrims and the requirement not to invent approvals.
The place thus offers a double memory: on the one hand, the history of a specific church raised in Villianur; on the other, the reference to Lourdes, where the advocation that the sanctuary received was born. Those who pray there can ask for the intercession of Mary for the sick and for the whole community, leaving to God the judgment of extraordinary signs and taking with caution what is not yet known.
