Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy is located in the Sanctuary area of Savona, Liguria, Italy. The official guide to the sanctuary is located in Piazza Sanctuary, 6, and OpenStreetMap identifies the shrine building. The point of the map points to the whole of worship; it does not aim to locate the stream or concrete rock that appear in the 1536 account.
Documented history
The tourist and institutional documentation of the sanctuary places the beginning of devotion in 1536 and describes a first chapel raised in the place of tradition. The guide to the sanctuary explains that the church was built that same year according to a project by Antonio Sormano Pace and that the works continued during the following years. It also documents the presence of the simple tomb of Blessed Antonio Botta, the witness associated with the apparition.
Devotion was integrated into Savona's life and attracted pilgrims from other places. The same guide recalls that Pius VII solemnly crowned the statue on May 10, 1815, after his Napoleonic captivity. The coronation and history of the building are institutional and cultural facts; they must not be confused with a statement on the supernatural of every detail of the founding account.
Tradition
The tradition places the first apparition on March 18, 1536, when Antonio Botta had seen a woman dressed in white and surrounded by light near a watercourse, in the valley of San Bernardo. The message transmitted is summarized in a call to conversion, prayer and mercy. The report of the sanctuary adds a second apparition on 8 April of the same year, related to the exhortation to live mercy. It is presented as a tradition and cultural memory, not as a complete transcription of a contemporary process.
Legend and limits of the record
The details about the light, fragrance and visible form of the figure belong to the devotional account. The sources consulted document the chapel, the sanctuary, the pilgrimage, the tomb of Botta and the coronation of 1815, but they do not here provide the full text of a decree that declares the apparition supernatural. That is why this fact sheet does not make the historical reception of the cult an independent statement of the supernatural origin of the phenomenon.
Ecclesial State
It is a public Catholic cult in the sanctuary and a pontifical coronation of the image in 1815. This record is recorded permitted veneration, referring to veneration and the sanctuary. It does not label the apparition as approved in the modern sense because there is no decree with that formulation in the sources consulted. The distinction allows respect for both the historical existence of the cult and the documentary limits of the judgment on the apparitions.
Anecdotes and stories
The sanctuary space retains a memory particularly linked to Antonio Botta: the official guide points to his simple burial as he enters the church. The coronation of 1815 is related to the vote that Pius VII would have made during his prison; fulfilled the vote, the statue received the crown in Savona. It is a story documented by the institutional tradition of the sanctuary and is counted here as such, without attributing to the coronation a new judgment about the apparition.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of mercy, intercedes for those who need reconciliation, comfort and hope. Teach us to practice mercy with concrete works and to direct all praise to God. Amen.
