Marian devotion
Where is he?
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mount Lussari is at the summit of Mount Lussari, in the municipality of Tarvisio, province of Udine, Friul- Venice Julia (Italy). The coordinate points to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap as Santuario Madonna del Lussari / Cerkev Višarske Kraljice. The place is linked to the so-called Celeste Way and an alpine area of passage between Italian, Slovenian and Germanophone communities.
Documented history
The history of the sanctuary is based on the continuity of the building, veneration and pilgrimages. The local tradition places in 1360 the finding of a small statue of Mary and the construction of a first chapel. The page of the Archdiocese of Udine retains this tradition, but the fact sheet distinguishes the account of origin from the later material documentation: the primitive chapel is not the building that is being seen today.
The sanctuary was transformed and destroyed. The diocesan source recalls the suppression promoted by Emperor Joseph II and the destruction of the temple and the nucleus inhabited during World War I. After each disaster the place was rebuilt; from the previous church there were some walls, the Marian statue and a burnt relief integrated into the building. These reconstructions belong to the history of the sanctuary and show the continuity of devotion, without demanding a supernatural explanation of each survival.
Tradition
Tradition tells that a shepherd found his sheep kneeling before a statue of Mary, hidden in the vegetation. After taking the image to the valley, he would have returned several times to the summit. The account explains the location of the sanctuary and its relationship with the pastors and travelers of the mountain. It is transmitted as a foundational tradition, not as a contemporary act to reconstruct all its details.
Legend and limits of the record
The attribution of the miraculous returns of the image and the providential reading of the survival of the sanctuary are part of the religious memory of Mount Lussari. There is no decree here to declare the finding of 1360 supernatural. This is why the file speaks of a venerated statue, sanctuary and tradition, and not of an approved apparition. The beauty of the place and the continuity of prayer do not depend on adding statements that sources do not establish.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted veneration: The Archdiocese of Udine presents the place as a Catholic sanctuary, maintains information for pilgrims and announces liturgical celebrations there. This state describes public veneration and pastoral care. It does not amount to a formal approval of the supernatural of the legend of finding or of all the favors attributed to the image.
Anecdotes and stories
The sanctuary is called "sanctuary of the three peoples" because it contains Latin, Germanic and Slavic linguistic and cultural traditions. The current pilgrimage brings together faithful from Italy, Slovenia and Austria, as well as visitors from other regions. Its position on the Celeste Way makes the rise an experience of prayer and European meeting, while the mountain recalls that the pilgrimage routes require care, preparation and respect for nature.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, accompanies those who walk through difficult paths and people who seek to live together. It intercede so that the borders do not destroy fraternity and that every pilgrimage will lead to the service of God and of others. Amen.
Sources
The sanctuary in the mountain
Mount Lussari is not just an isolated point on the map. Its position explains that the sanctuary has worked as a meeting place between mountain routes and communities of various languages. The diocesan source describes the coexistence of Latin, Germanic and Slavic cultures and presents the sanctuary as the goal of the Celestial Way. This territorial dimension is part of the identity of the place and helps to understand why devotion has exceeded the scope of a single parish.
The post-World War I reconstruction did not erase the previous memory. On the contrary, the current building retains elements that allow us to remember the losses suffered by the sanctuary and the small inhabited nucleus of the summit. The Marian statue and the burnt relief have devotional and testimonial value; they are not used here as proof of a supernatural intervention. The survival of objects and walls can be historically narrated, while their religious interpretation remains in the realm of tradition.
Pilgrimage with responsibility
The pastoral information of the Archdiocese offers hours of Mass, confession and access linked to the opening of the ascending station. This practical data recalls that an alpine pilgrimage requires preparation, attention to time and respect for the rules of the environment. The sanctuary receives both those who expressly pray and those who cross the mountain; Christian reception must maintain the sacred character of the place without making tourism an affirmation of the legendary origins of the image.
The tradition of the shepherd and of the image that returned to the summit can be read as a way of explaining the relationship between Mary, the path and the community. The tab does not decide more than the sources allow: it does not set a date as a supernatural fact, does not identify specific witnesses that do not record and does not present a cure or a prodigy as approved. It does record a living sanctuary, the liturgy that is celebrated there and a history of reconstruction that deserves to be known.
