Marian devotion
Where is he?
Kallikulam is located in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, south of India. The diocese of Tuticorin presents there the church and sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snow, also called Panimatha or Athisaya Panimatha in local sources. The point of the map represents the town of Kallikulam, not an inner GPS of the church or the hill: the available cartographic consultation safely identifies the village, but does not return an unequivocal building of the sanctuary.
Documented history
The page of the diocese of Tuticorin reports that the Soosai Nadar family was the first Christian family established in Kallikulam and that in 1770 it raised a small church dedicated to Mary, then covered with palm leaves. The present church is related to a later work: in 1884 the inhabitants and the Jesuits decided to build a new temple. Father Cousanal placed the first stone on September 5, 1884; the main work was completed in 1886 and was consecrated to Our Lady of the Snow. The tower began in 1941 and was completed in 1942, according to the same parish source.
The annual feast is held, according to the diocesan information, from 27 July to 5 August. The sanctuary is part of the parish life of the diocese and has other spaces of Marian prayer in its surroundings. These data document the existence of the temple, its veneration and its community continuity; they do not in themselves prove the supernatural character of any account.
Tradition of the apparition of 1939
The diocese retains the account of an apparition on the hill near the church on March 23, 1939, about six and a half in the afternoon. According to the diocesan page, six boys who played there said they had seen Mary in the middle of a white light, with veil and hands together, for a few seconds. The same story speaks of water falling from the area of his feet and of prints that, according to local tradition, can still be seen on the hill.
The above formulation describes what the diocesan source counts; it does not turn the narrative into a proven fact. The sources consulted do not contain a public coetane act or a decree declaring the apparition supernatural. The investigation report used to locate the case provides an alternative date, but this fact sheet follows the date of 23 March on the official Tuticorin page and records the documentary limitation.
Extraordinary legends and stories
The same parish history tells that when the size and place of the new church of 1884 was discussed, a land that was surrounded by a hot summer appeared wet by the morning dew. The faithful interpreted that fact as a sign of Mary's intercession to choose the site. It is a devotional interpretation preserved by the community, not an independent historical conclusion.
The traces of the hill and the description of the water of the apparition also belong to tradition. The tab does not claim that the water has healing properties or that these prints are a material proof of the apparition. The pilgrimages and the veneration of the image can be documented without presenting the extraordinary elements of the story as approved.
Ecclesial State
The sanctuary and parish appear on the web of the diocese of Tuticorin within the public Catholic cult of Our Lady of the Snow. That's why this tab identifies the state of the place as permitted veneration. It does not contain, in the sources verified for this lot, an ecclesial declaration that recognizes as supernatural the apparition of 1939, the dew of the land, the water or the footprints. The allowed cult of the temple should not be confused with an approval of all the phenomena narrated.
Anecdotes and stories
The memory of Kallikulam unites three times: the first chapel attributed to 1770, the construction of the church of 1884-1886 and the tradition of the hill of 1939. The multi-day party keeps that memory in the life of the local community. The historical list of parish priests published by the diocese also shows a prolonged pastoral continuity, but it is not reproduced here as proof of any miracle.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, accompanies those who pilgrim Kallikulam and those who seek comfort in the midst of their difficulties. Teach us to receive faith with humility, to discern with prudence what is counted and to live together with Christ. Pray for the families of Tamil Nadu, for the diocese of Tuticorin and for all who come to this sanctuary. Amen.
