Marian devotion
Where is he?
La Niña María de Caloto is a venerated Marian advocation in the municipality of Caloto, department of Cauca, Colombia. The main celebration takes place on 8 September, the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. The pastoral and municipal documentation identifies the temple of the girl Mary and the annual pilgrimage, but the cartographic sources consulted do not allow the exact building to be safely fixed. Therefore the point of the map is placed in the town of Caloto, at 3.0337, -76.4085, with precision locality. There is no such centre as the temple coordinate.
Documented history
Devotion appears linked to the religious history of Caloto and an image of Mary represented with children's features. The research report has placed it in the memory of the population since colonial times, but no complete record of authorship, date of size or transfer is kept in the cross-cutting sources to allow for the conversion of all these data into a secure history. The fact sheet therefore maintains the existence of the advocation and its local cult, without filling the gaps with an invented chronology.
The Alcaldia de Caloto documents the pilgrimage in honor of the girl Mary as an annual celebration on 8 September. It also includes the presence of the temple of the Mary girl in the archdiocesan documentation of Popayán, which includes it among the places of celebration of the Holy Year. These testimonies prove the continuity of devotion and its insertion into the local Catholic life; they do not in themselves constitute a judgment of a supernatural origin.
An academic research from the University of Cauca also retains references to the image and its place in the social memory of Caloto. The document does not replace a canonical decree on the history of the image, but helps to distinguish living devotion from statements that do not have sufficient documentary support.
Tradition
In the tradition of Caloto, the image is known as Niña María and her feast is linked to the Nativity of Mary. Local and ecclesial sources describe pilgrimages, prayer and Eucharistic celebration, practices that express the veneration of the faithful. When it comes to the age of the image or its relationship with the early stages of the population, the character of local historical memory is preserved until the primary document which allows the date to be specified appears.
Legend
There is no Marian apparition approved or a miracle recognized by the ecclesial authority for this advocation. Nor has a file been located in the cross-sectional sources that allows the origin of the image to be presented as a supernatural fact. Stories that cannot be documented are either as a tradition or as unobserved, not as a proven history.
Ecclesial State
The state is recorded as permitted veneration in the limited sense of a publicly venerated advocation in a Catholic temple and celebrated within the local pastoral. The Archdiocese of Popayán mentions the Temple of the Girl Mary of Caloto in its pastoral documentation, and the municipal authority documents the annual pilgrimage. There is no decree declaring a supernatural apparition related to the image, nor is an approved miracle affirmed here.
Anecdotes and stories
The date of September 8 gives devotion a clear liturgical framework: the community meets to honor the Nativity of Mary. Local research also retains the social memory of the image as one of Caloto's religious references. The documentation gathered speaks of pilgrimage and Eucharistic celebration; it does not provide a stable number of attendees or a complete list of events for each year, so these data are not added.
Prayer
Santa María, Niña María de Caloto, pray for the families and the community that meets at your party. Teach us to receive with simplicity the grace of God, to care for the little ones and to walk with hope with your Son Jesus. He presents to him our pleas and helps us to live the faith with charity. Amen.

Documentary extension
The municipal documentation confirms that the pilgrimage in honor of the girl Mary is held every 8 September and that she brings together the faithful around the feast. The research of the University of Cauca also provides an ethnographic look: it includes the reference to the altar of the image, describes a 67-inch effigy and reflects the memory of the celebration in which mestizo, Afro-descendant and indigenous communities participate. These data document the social life of devotion; they do not themselves prove the favors or miracles that some faithful attribute to Mary's intercession.
The same research retains several versions of the origin of the image. An oral memory relates to a finding in a guadua mata and the old displacements of the settlement; another version, transmitted in the local literature that the study cites, links it to an image arrived from Seville and to the history of Caloto Viejo. In the absence of a coetarian historical inventory to resolve divergence, both references remain as tradition and memory, not as a secure chronology. The study also shows that the image was canonically crowned on September 8, 1954 and that until 1975 it was known with the title of Our Lady of the Rosary; they are data from the secondary source consulted and remain differentiated from the account of origin.
