Our Lady of the Peña de Vila Velha

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Peña is located in Morro da Penha, in Vila Velha, state of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Convent da Penha is built on the peñasco and is part of the historical landscape of the Bay of Vitória. The institution itself presents it as a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Peña and as a place of Marian pilgrimage.

The map uses the coordinates -20.3293225, -40.2870728, for the building cartographed by OpenStreetMap (way 298241604). The precision is verified_building: the built set has been located, not an inner position of the image or the exact point of each episode narrated by tradition.

Documented history

The Convent da Penha places the arrival of Frei Pedro Palácio to the captains of the Holy Spirit in 1558. According to the institutional history of the sanctuary, the Franciscan carried with him the panel of Our Lady of the Alegries and found refuge in a grotto of the moron. In 1562 he built a chapel dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi in the place today called Campinho.

The chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Peña was built on the top of the peñasco in 1568, and the image from Portugal arrived in 1569. The set was expanded in different stages; the source of the convent also relates to 1650 the fundamental stone of subsequent dependencies. These dates describe the architectural and devotional history communicated by the sanctuary, without turning every local tradition into an extraordinary proven fact.

Devotion was linked to the Franciscan presence and to the romanies. The institutional chronology mentions a rosemary at the top of Morro da Penha in 1573 and notes that in 1912 the Holy See declared Our Lady of the Peña patron of the Diocese of the Holy Spirit. The same story recalls the heritage protection of the whole and its restorations, data that help to understand that the sanctuary is also a living historical monument.

Tradition

The tradition of the place tells that the panel of Our Lady of Joy disappeared from the grotto and appeared on the top of the rock. The story interpreted these displacements as an indication of the place chosen for the chapel. It is preserved here as a tradition of the sanctuary, not as a documented independent historical statement or as a decree of supernatural.

The romaneries, the parties and the visit of the pilgrims express the Catholic veneration of Mary. The Church teaches that Mary is venerated and asked to intercede before God; worship corresponds only to God. The devotion of Our Lady of Peña is understood within that relationship with Christ and not as a divinization of the Virgin.

Legend and limits of the record

The popular history of the convent keeps stories about the intervention of the Virgin in times of drought, about the promises of sailors and about graces received by pilgrims. The institutional source documents the existence of these memories and devotional practice, but does not provide with them a canonical file that declares all episodes supernatural. That is why this fact sheet does not present any particular account as a proven miracle.

Ecclesial State

Consta permitted venerationThere is a public Catholic sanctuary, attended by the Franciscan community and recognized in diocesan life; in addition, the institutional history records the diocesan patronage of Our Lady of Peña. A statement approving the traditional panel movements as a supernatural apparition is not recorded in the cross-cutting sources, and no such approval is stated.

Anecdotes and stories

The sanctuary brings together several layers of memory: the grotto associated with Frei Pedro Palácios, the chapel of Saint Francis, the hermitage of Our Lady of Peña, the convent and the works of art that remember its history. The building, embedded in the rock and overlooking Vila Velha and the Atlantic Ocean, explains why the place became a destination of pilgrims and also a cultural reference of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Our Lady of the Peña, intercede before God for the pilgrims, for the families of Vila Velha and for those who seek refuge in the midst of their difficulties. Take us to Jesus Christ, teach us to trust and help us to serve with humility. Amen.
