Where is he?
The Basilica Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piedad is located on the top of the Serra da Piedade, in the municipality of Caeté, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The National Conference of Bishops of Brazil presents it as the place of the patron of Minas Gerais. The archdiocese identifies it as a sanctuary and offers spaces for prayer, pilgrimage and celebration.
The coordinates used are -19.8228102, -43.6754967, corresponding to the shrine building identified by OpenStreetMap (way 185601200). The precision is verified_building: the mapping set has been verified, not the inner position of the image or the exact place of a traditional account.
Documented history
The historical page of the sanctuary states that on September 30, 1767 Antônio da Silva Bracarena and Manuel Coelho Santiago were licensed to build a chapel with the invocation of Our Lady of the Piety at the top of the then-called Serra do Caeté. The authorization of a chapel and the subsequent construction are documented institutional facts and constitute the known beginning of the sanctuary.
The same source explains that in 1856 the cappuccino Frei Luiz de Ravena resumed the works and extended the chapel because it was no longer sufficient for the number of faithful. Over time, the place developed a host structure for pilgrims and a basilica that lives with the hermitage of the patron. The history of the building shows the continuity of the cult through successive generations.
The CNBB also documents that Our Lady of the Piety was officialized as patron of Minas Gerais on 31 July 1960. The present sanctuary retains that state and diocesan dimension, but patronage should not be confused with the approval of every detail of the original narrations.
Tradition
The tradition of the place relates devotion to the account of an apparition of Our Lady to two young people in the saw and to the history of the first chapel. The CNBB retains this reference in the context of the religious memory of Minas Gerais. Here it is presented as a transmitted tradition, while the license of 1767, the extension of the 19th century and the recognition of patronage are presented as a documented institutional history.
The pilgrims go up to the saw to participate in the liturgy, pray and ask for the intercession of Mary. The veneration of Our Lady of Mercy leads to Christ and is not worship: worship is addressed only to God.
Legend and limits of the record
The narration of the apparition and the graces that the devotees can attribute to the sanctuary belong to tradition or to concrete testimonies as long as there is no canonical record that declares them miracles. The existence of a basilica, the title of patron and the public celebration of the cult do not allow any extraordinary intervention to be presented as proven.
Ecclesial State
Consta permitted veneration: the archdiocese maintains a sanctuary and a basilica dedicated to Our Lady of Mercy, and CNBB documents its patronage of Minas Gerais. The verified sources do not contain a separate pronunciation that approves as supernatural each account of the traditional apparition; therefore no additional state for the phenomenon is inferred.
Anecdotes and stories
La Serra da Piedade unites geography, architecture and pilgrimage. The hermitage of the patron, the State Basilica of the Romeries and the reception spaces form a set that allows visitors to move from contemplation of the landscape to community prayer. The archdiocesan source also retains the memory of the 1856 enlargement, a concrete response to the growth of the number of faithful.
