Our Lady of Pilone (Turin, Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Madonna del Pilone church is in Corso Casale, Turin, by the Po River. The current building is identified by OpenStreetMap as the Chiesa della Madonna del Pilone. The coordinate points to the church, not the old mill or the specific point of the river related to the devotional account.

Documented history

In 1587 the parish of Madonna del Pilone placed the construction of a pilon dedicated to the Annunciation, with the image of the Virgin and the angel oriented towards the Po. The place was part of a neighborhood related to the floating mills of the river; the parish source itself mentions the so-called chain mill, documented there since 1474. The history of the pilon and the neighborhood belongs to the documentation of the place and can be separated from the extraordinary interpretations later.

The church was built in 1645 at the will of Cristina of France and Cardinal Maurizio of Savoy, incorporating the vocal pilon to the main altar. Turismo Torino describes a central plant with octagonal dome, later enlargements and works of art linked to the building. The construction of 1645 is presented by the sources as a memory of the rescue that occurred the previous year; this historical relationship alone is not sufficient to establish a supernatural judgment.

Tradition

The account of April 29, 1644 shows that an 11-year-old girl, the daughter of a shoemaker, accompanied her mother Margherita Molar to the mill to bring flour. The girl fell into the river and was exposed to the wheels of the mill. Tradition states that the mother invoked the Virgin and that the child was rescued alive, after a light indicated the place where she was. The parish chronicle retains this episode as the miracle that made the pillon known.

Legend and limits of the record

The light that would have guided those seeking the girl and the direct intervention of the Virgin belong to the traditional language of the story. TorinoClick and the parish speak of the rescue as miraculous, while the sources consulted here do not provide an identifiable decree that declares the episode supernatural. This is why the documented existence of the pilon, the church and the exvote of the extraordinary affirmation of light and rescue is distinguished.

Ecclesial State

The church maintains public Catholic veneration and the advocation is part of the parish life of Turin. This record is recorded permitted veneration, applied to the veneration of the image and the place. It is not said that the Church has approved every detail of the 1644 rescue as supernatural or that the story should be read as a complete contemporary medical or historical report.

Anecdotes and stories

The building retains the material memory of its origin: the Pillon of the Annunciation was incorporated into the main altar, and the exvote associated with the rescue recalls the relationship between the church and the river. Turinese sources also point to reforms in 1779 and reconstructions in 1817. The continuity of the building shows how a local history of help became a place of prayer and urban presence, without the need to add details that are not reflected in the sources consulted.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of mercy, intercedes for children, families and those who are in danger. Give us caution to help the suffering and gratitude for all well received. Amen.
