Our Lady of Piné (Montagnaga, Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Sanctuary of the Comparsa, dedicated to Our Lady of Piné, is in Montagnaga, municipality of Basberga di Piné, autonomous province of Trento (Italy). The coordinate corresponds to the cult building cartographed by OpenStreetMap as Sanctuary of the Comparsa. The document refers to this sanctuary and the tradition of Montagnaga, not to other Italian places dedicated to the Madonna di Caravaggio.

Documented history

The story of Montagnaga is linked to Domenica Targa, a young woman from the area, and to five apparitions attributed between 1729 and 1730: 14 and 26 May, 8 and 10 September 1729, and 26 May 1730. The sources of the sanctuary and the document of the diocese of Trent distinguish the account of the apparitions of the ecclesiastical research that was carried out later.

The former bishop of Trento ordered a process to be carried out in 1730. The diocesan documentation explains that many known details come from the minutes of this process and from manuscripts later preserved in Trento. The church of Montagnaga was extended and the sanctuary developed after the events; the consulted source placed its consecration in 1751. The existence of the acts, the church and the pilgrimage belongs to the documented history, while the supernatural interpretation of the visions is presented with the caution required by the source.

Tradition

Tradition tells that Domenica Targa met a Lady while praying and taking care of the cattle. In the sanctuary the memory of the different scenes and the relationship of the young woman with the community of Montagnaga is preserved. The devotion especially recalls the prayer of the Rosary, the celebrations of May and September and the influx of pilgrims who go up to the Comparsa.

The last apparition attributed to a crowd is related in devotional literature to cures. Subsequent records and accounts should be read by distinguishing the testimony of those who testified, the religious interpretation of these facts and possible medical or supernatural certification. No concrete healing as a approved miracle is presented in this sheet.

Legend and limits of the record

The language of "apparition" is part of the tradition and pastoral history of Montagnaga. The diocesan process of 1730 and the authorization of a feast are documented ecclesial data; they are not identical to a modern formula of supernaturality. This is why it is not stated here any more than the sources allow: it consists of research, the continuity of the sanctuary and veneration, but no contemporary decree is provided that makes a supernatural approval in these terms.

Ecclesial State

Consta permitted veneration. The documentation of the diocese of Trento contains the ancient process and diocesan authorization to solemnly celebrate the feast of May 26. This state allows to describe the liturgical life and the pilgrimage of the sanctuary; it does not automatically convert every visionary detail or every healing account into an declared supernatural fact.

Anecdotes and stories

The history of Montagnaga retains a close relationship between a rural community, the prayer of the Rosary and a sanctuary that was growing with the arrival of pilgrims. The succession of dates - two days in May, two days in September and the commemoration of 26 May - orders the devotional calendar. The documentation of the process also recalls that the memory of events did not depend only on an oral tradition: it was written and studied by the ecclesiastical authority of Trento.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, intercedes for those who seek God with a simple heart. Give us love of the truth, prudence to discern and perseverance in prayer, that every pilgrimage may lead us to Christ and to the service of the brothers. Amen.

The Montagnaga Process

The document of the diocese of Trento allows for a more detailed follow-up of a local account to an ecclesiastical research. According to this source, the Vicar General's reconstitution of May 17, 1730 commissioned the examination of the facts to the priest Antonio Flamacino. The process began in the castle of the Buonconsiglio of Trento on May 20, continued there until the 23rd and resumed on August 22 in Montagnaga. Domenica Targa stated in Trento about the four apparitions that had already occurred and later confirmed their deposition in Montagnaga; the fifth one refers to 26 May 1730.

This documentary tour is important because it is not limited to repeating a pious story without context. It also shows the limits of what can be said: we know the existence of the examination, the declarations and the authorization of the party, but the existence of an old process does not automatically amount to a modern declaration of supernatural. The document retains the language of "assigned apparitions" and records the permitted veneration, making clear which part of the minutes and which part of the subsequent devotional interpretation.

The memory of the sanctuary is also based on the church of Santa Ana, the Comparsa and the pilgrimage of May and September. It is a story of specific people, specific dates and specific documents; it does not need to add uncertified miracles to explain why Montagnaga remains a loved place of prayer.
