Marian devotion
Where is he?
Notre-Dame de Prime-Combe, also written Primecombe, is in the territory of Fontanès, in the department of the Gard, region of Occitania, France. The point of the map corresponds to the monastery identified by OpenStreetMap at the Primecombe Route. This is a reference to the place of worship and not to an exact GPS of the bush, source or any episode transmitted by tradition.
Documented history
The Office of Tourisme du Pays de Sommières presents Prime-Combe as the main place in the religious history of Fontanès and states that the cult continues today. It describes a church of Notre-Dame de Prime-Combe built in the 9th century, restored on various occasions and turned into a place of pilgrimage known since the Middle Ages. The same source distinguishes the Marian church from the parish church raised in the village during the 19th century.
A notebook of the Fondation des Monastères has since the 9th century located the Marian site of Notre-Dame de Primecombe, surrounded by green oak and madroños. This source also documents the installation, in 1997, of a priory of the Benedictine congregation of Notre-Dame d'Esperance. The community was created so that people with disabilities or fragile health who want a monastic life can live their vocation according to their possibilities, following the rule of Saint Benedict.
The same document describes the daily life of the priory: 11 monks lived there in 2011, many of them in a wheelchair, and dedicated part of each day to the care of the most fragile brothers and to the maintenance of the buildings. It is a concrete dimension of the recent history of the place, which should not be hidden behind the foundational legend. First-Combe appears as well as a Marian sanctuary attached to a monastic community and to the reception of pilgrims.
In 2025, a statement by the Bishop of Nîmes - consulted in the research, although his web file was not available with a response 200 in this check - described the diocesan will to preserve the chapel of the sanctuary, its access and the spaces of prayer. For prudence, this document does not use this document as a published link, nor does it attribute more to it than is found in the available archived sources.
Tradition
The Prime-Combe tradition places the origin of the title in a finding related to a shepherd and an ox kneeling in a hidden image in a bush. The account explains the relationship between the image, the landscape and the place of worship. The continuity of the pilgrimage, the church and devotion are documented; the supernatural intervention of the animal belongs to the plane of tradition.
Legend
The story adds that, after taking the image to the parish, it returned to the bush. A traditional dating of the finding is also preserved in 887. These statements are part of Prime- Combe's religious memory, but there is no contemporary act of the fact or a decree that approves the legend as a miracle. The fact sheet separates the historical heritage from the story of invention.
Ecclesial State
It consists of a Marian Catholic sanctuary and a continuity of veneration and pilgrimage in Fontanès. The accessible sources document the church, the place of prayer and the monastic life, but do not provide a formal pronunciation that declares supernatural the finding of the image or the return to the bush. This is why it is recorded as a permitted Catholic cult and local tradition, without classifying it as an approved apparition.
Anecdotes and stories
The natural environment is part of the experience of the place: the Marian site is described between green oak and madroños, separated from the main core of Fontanès. The recent history of the priory introduces another anecdote of great human value: people with physical limitations found there a Benedictine way of life and participated in the care of the community and its buildings.
The devotion of Prime- Combe can welcome both the memory of those who came for centuries and the silent life of those who pray and work there. Mary is asked to intercession before God; the tradition of the sanctuary should not replace discernment or concrete charity.
Prayer
St. Mary of Prime- Combe, accompanies those who pilgrim in search of silence, comfort and hope. He intercedes before Jesus for the sick, for the disabled, for those who live a hidden vocation and for those who care for their brothers. Make the prayer received in this place become service and mercy. Amen.
