Marian devotion
Where is he?
Our Lady of Quézac is to be seen in the former collegiate, today church of Notre-Dame, in Quézac, municipality of Gorges du Tarn Causses, department of Lozère, region of Occitania, France. The map's coordinate corresponds to the cult building cartographed by OpenStreetMap as Collégiale Notre-Dame. It should not be read as the exact GPS of the groove, bush, or specific point of the source accounts.
Documented history
The church of Quézac is part of the historical heritage of the Lozère. The property base of the Ministry of Culture records the building and its transformations, including the traces of religious conflicts that affected Quézac. The historical tradition of the place also links the collegiate with Pope Urban V, from the region, and with the medieval organization of a community of canons. These data belong to the institutional and architectural history of the temple, they do not in themselves constitute a statement on the supernatural character of the origin of the image.
In 2025, the diocese of Mende presented a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Quézac and described the continuity of the Marian celebration. The diocesan source retains the account of the farmer who would have found a Black Virgin while working the earth and the memory that the image returned to the place of the find. The present existence of the church, pilgrimage and pastoral activity are documented; the prodigy is kept separate as a tradition.
The building that is visited today is therefore more than the stage of a legend: it is a historical church, a place of prayer and a point of pilgrimage. Heritage protection and diocesan activity offer two complementary perspectives: the visible history of the monument and the religious life that continues around Our Lady.
Tradition
Tradition tells that a farmer discovered the image after his oxen stopped. By taking her to the church, she would have disappeared during the night and returned to the site of the find. The account explains the choice of the site and the relationship between the image and the land worked by the inhabitants. It is presented as a memory transmitted by devotion, not as a contemporary act of the event.
Legend
There have also been reports of the return of the statue and of relics associated with the collegiate. The supernatural authenticity of these details is not recorded in the cross-cutting sources. The fact sheet retains the wealth of tradition without making it a test: the Church can sustain a Marian cult and a pilgrimage without stating that each episode of origin has been shown as a miracle.
Ecclesial State
They have a historical church dedicated to Notre-Dame, Marian pilgrimage and pastoral care documented by the Ministry of Culture and the diocese of Mende. There is no formal decree in these sources to approve as supernatural the finding of the image or its return to the initial place. It is therefore registered as a permitted Catholic cult and local tradition, without classifying Quézac as an approved Marian apparition.
Anecdotes and stories
The relationship between Quézac and Urban V adds a medieval dimension to devotion: the temple is not only a point of passage, but a place linked to the religious history of the region. The diocesan pilgrimage shows that the advocation continues to be part of the life of the faithful and that the building continues to be a space for celebration, recollection and prayer.
Prayer
St. Mary of Quézac, accompanies those who come weary on the roads and those who seek light in the midst of uncertainty. Intercede to your Son for the families, for the workers, for the sick and for the pilgrims. May truth, charity and hope guard our faith. Amen.
