Our Lady Queen of Angels
Patrona de Jimena de la Frontera (Cadiz)
In the neighborhood of Los Angeles, an ancient Franciscan sanctuary guards the Queen of the Angels, patron of Jimena de la Frontera, who every five years travels his people in extraordinary procession.
Origin and history
The sanctuary was probably raised at the end of the 15th century by the Franciscans, with its existence attested in a document of 1543; it was extended in the 17th century and also had the Minimum Fathers until the decriminalization of 1820. The set retains cloister, bell tower and a baroque shrimp for the image. The pious tradition - without historical backing - attributes the size to St Luke, brought from Antioch to the year 190, which belongs to the realm of legend.
Our Lady Queen of the Angels is the patron of Jimena de la Frontera. It carries out ordinary procession on the first Sunday of September and an extraordinary procession every five years - in the years ended in 0 and 5 - an expression of a devotion deeply rooted in the people and their serrano environment.
Official liturgical date and canonical coronation: not recorded in the sources.
