Our Lady of Rosa (San Vito al Tagliamento, Italy)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Rosa is in San Vito al Tagliamento, province of Pordenone, Friul- Venice Julia (Italy). The coordinate used is that of the Catholic building cartographed in OpenStreetMap as Sanctuary of Madonna di Rosain Piazzale del Sanctuary. The sanctuary belongs to the diocese of Concordia- Pordenone and retains a chapel dedicated to the Marian image.

Documented history

The diocese describes the image as a modest fresco of the 16th century that represents the Mother of God with the Child. The work was linked to the ancient core of Rosa, a population that changed its location several times by the floods of the Tagliamento River. Giovanni Giacomuzzi's family kept the image in the court of his house, where he received acts of piety and celebrations from the neighbors.

The present sanctuary also has a history marked by war. The bombing of 31 December 1944 and 22 March 1945 destroyed the building. The diocesan source reports that the fresco was located intact after both episodes, first between the ruins of the sanctuary and then in the convent where it had been moved. The first stone of the new temple was placed on 8 September 1953 and the sanctuary was opened to veneration in 1960.

Tradition

The tradition of the place tells that Maria Giacomuzzi, an eight-year-old girl who suffered frequent attacks, saw the Virgin while praying the Rosary on February 2, 1655. According to the account preserved by the sanctuary, Mary asked that the image be moved to a church and promised the healing of the girl as a sign. The image was taken to the church of San Nicolò on March 3 of the same year. It is presented as a devotional tradition transmitted by the community and not as a complete transcription of a contemporary medical file.

Legend and limits of the record

The preservation of the fresco under the ruins and the healing attributed to the vision are narrated with prodigious language by the sources of the sanctuary. The fact sheet distinguishes the verifiable elements - the existence of the fresco, the bombing, the reconstruction and the continuity of the cult - from the supernatural interpretation of healing or preservation. There is no independent decree here to declare each of these facts a miracle.

Ecclesial State

Consta permitted veneration. The diocese of Concordia- Pordenone recognizes the sanctuary, reports its direction, celebrations and patron's feast of September 8, and describes its devotional center. This state refers to the public Catholic cult of the image and the sacramental life of the sanctuary; it does not automatically convert the account of 1655 or the preservation of the fresco into a declaration of supernatural.

Anecdotes and stories

The feast of the Nativity of Mary brings together each year the patron celebration, while on February 2 it retains the memory of the episode attributed to Maria Giacomuzzi. The new sanctuary was conceived as a large church, with a Latin cross plant, polychrome marbles and a chapel that concentrates devotion. Rosa's history thus unites a humble image, the displacement of a community by the river and the reconstruction of a place of prayer after the war.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, accompanies displaced families, the sick and those who rebuild their lives after destruction. It intercede so that the memory of our wounds becomes solidarity and hope. Amen.

The community of Rosa

The history of the sanctuary is linked to a community that lived next to the Tagliamento and saw its core move through the river's floods. Rosa's name is not a simple ornament of the title: it recalls a territory, families and a local memory that was incorporated into Marian devotion. The fresco, preserved first in a domestic environment and then in a church, accompanied that story of changes and losses.

The diocese describes the sanctuary as a Latin cross church. In the chapel of Madonna, the image occupies the artistic and devotional center, next to the tabernacle, the polychrome marbles and the praying angels. The form of the building expresses a visual catechesis: Mary is honored as Mother who leads to Christ, not as a separate divinity. The celebrations and the feast of 8 September maintain this liturgical framework.

The memory of war

The two bombings of 1944 and 1945 and the subsequent reconstruction explain an essential part of the identity of the site. The diocesan source states that the fresco was found intact after the ruins; that statement is part of the devotional memory and is cited as such. The existence of the bombing, the destruction of the building, the placement of the first stone in 1953 and the opening of the new sanctuary in 1960 are the historical elements that allow the reconstruction process to be followed.

The celebration of February 2 retains the memory of the tradition of Maria Giacomuzzi, while the Nativity of Mary brings together the patron party. The community can thank the graces received without each testimony automatically becoming a canon miracle. This fact sheet, therefore, presents the story with respect, points out its limits and leaves the reader to distinguish the historical event, the tradition transmitted and the judgment that does not contain.
