Marian devotion
Where is he?
San Damiano is a town in the Italian province of Piacenza, in the town of San Giorgio Piacentino. The coordinate of this file comes from OpenStreetMap for the town of San Damiano; it is not presented as the exact location of a chapel, garden or specific point of the stories. The place appears in the contemporary history of devotion known as Madonna of the Roses or Our Lady of the Roses.
Documented history
The sources consulted place the beginning of the experiences attributed to Rosa Quattrini on 16 October 1964. The episode gave rise to a current of pilgrimage and messages that spread among devoted groups from Italy and other countries. The existence of the town, the influx of pilgrims and the interventions of the bishops belongs to the documented history of the case; it does not amount to certifying that the apparitions were produced.
The bishopric of Piacenza issued warnings in the early years, including those of 1965, 1966 and 1968. The sources that reproduce or summarize the episcopal position describe restrictions on the dissemination of messages and the presentation of facts as supernatural. On 1 September 1986, Bishop Antonio Mazza reiterated the negative judgment: the facts had no supernatural basis and should not be linked to devotional practices as if they had been approved.
This sequence allows to distinguish three realities that are sometimes mixed: a contemporary religious phenomenon effectively studied and followed by pilgrims; the statements of the seer and its followers; and the assessment of diocesan authority. The subsequent presence of ordinary sacramental attention in the area did not, according to the sources consulted, reverse the negative judgment on the supernatural of the alleged apparitions.
Tradition
The tradition of pilgrims retains stories of weekly meetings, Marian messages, prayer of the Rosary and signs attributed to Mary's intercession. Rosa Quattrini is also remembered as a woman who continued to be linked to the place and who, when she received orders not to spread messages, would have kept a life away. These elements are presented as devotional memory and as testimonies of participants, not as established supernatural facts.
Legend and limits of the record
The accounts of roses, lights, cures, sources and messages belong to the set of statements of the movement and to the literature of pilgrimage. There is no ecclesial recognition of these signs or a medical record to present a concrete healing as a miracle. Nor should San Damiano, Piacenza, be confused with the convent of San Damiano de Assis related to Santa Clara: they are different places.
Ecclesial State
For apparitions and messages attributed to Rosa Quattrini is recorded rejectedbecause the episcopal position reproduced by the sources consulted denies its supernatural foundation and maintained that assessment. This state refers to apparitions, not to the dignity of the people who pilgrim or to the possibility of praying Christian. An ordinary mass or pastoral care in the place does not make the apparitions approved.
Anecdotes and stories
The case shows how a contemporary devotion can continue internationally even after a negative episcopal assessment. The sources recall that pastoral prudence allowed some of the pilgrimage to be channelled and that some priests celebrated the Eucharist, while maintaining the reservation on the supernatural origin of the facts. Local history deserves to be known without ridiculizing pilgrims and without presenting as certainty what the Church has not recognized.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Jesus, intercedes for those who seek God in the midst of doubt, suffering and desire for comfort. Grant us love for the truth, humble obedience to the Church and charity with those who think otherwise. Amen.

Context of the place and devotion
San Damiano belongs to the rural landscape of Piacenza and is not an urban center to be confused with the great Italian Marian shrines. The small scale of the town helps to understand the tension between the international influx of pilgrims and the decisions of the diocesan authority. A devotion can have a real human geography - travel, prayer groups, testimonies and meetings - without that geography itself demonstrating the supernatural origin of messages.
The secondary sources also describe a pastoral evolution: first there were warnings and prohibitions related to the messages; then some of the presence of pilgrims was allowed to be channelled through sacramental care. It's two different planes. The Church can attend to people who pray and at the same time maintain a negative judgment about the apparitions that motivated her journey. This distinction is especially important in order not to turn an ordinary liturgical celebration into an approval of visions.
The story of Rosa Quattrini must also be kept with caution. The sources present their obedience to the restrictions as part of the memory of the case, but the biographical and spiritual details do not replace episcopal documentation. Here nothing is stated about hidden intentions, fraud or personal holiness: it is simply recorded that the alleged apparitions were not recognized and that the ecclesial judgment communicated in 1986 was negative.
How to read this tab today
Anyone who visits San Damiano can find people who pray, memories of a recent religious history and sincere Marian sensitivity. The visit must respect the awareness of the pilgrims and also the Church's teaching of discernment. The Christian veneration of Mary always refers to Jesus Christ; it does not allow us to present as the word of the Virgin what is not approved or to attribute to God a miracle that has not been judged. This fact sheet therefore retains the historical interest of the place and at the same time leaves visible its documentary limits and its ecclesial state.
