Marian devotion
Where is he?
The shrine of Our Lady of the Suc is located in the commune of Brissac, department of Hérault, region of Occitania, France. It is located in the Séroanne massif, north of Montpellier, in an environment of roads and hills. The point of the map corresponds to the cult building identified by OpenStreetMap as Notre-Dame-du-Suc; it does not appear as the exact place of each tradition over the image.
Documented history
The page of the sanctuary published by the diocese of Montpellier describes a place of Marian prayer that sinks its roots in the history of Brissac. The tradition places in the eighth century the presence of a bouvier, an ox, a dolmen and the finding of a statue of the Virgin with the Child. The same source explains that the Benedictine of Brissac decided to lift a chapel on the Suc hill. The continuity of the veneration and the existence of the sanctuary belong to the religious history of the place; the way of finding it is in the context of tradition.
The history documented by the diocese also reflects the vote of Jean de Courdurier in 1706. He and his wife, already older, asked Our Lady of the Suc for the gift of a son. After the birth, according to the diocesan fountain, Courdurier rebuilt the chapel and commissioned a new statue that contained the small venerated image inside it. This episode must be attributed to the source and memory of the sanctuary; it is not presented as a miracle approved by an independent decree.
The present basilica and its reception spaces are part of the pastoral life of the sanctuary. In the Jubilee of Hope of 2025, the place was included among the Jubilee churches of the diocese of Montpellier. The celebration of Marian masses, the reception of pilgrims and the moments of prayer show the current continuity of devotion.
Tradition
The traditional story speaks of a statue found next to a dolmen and its return to the same place after it was moved. Tradition explains the name of the mountain and the construction of the first chapel. The later devotion linked the sanctuary to vocations and couples who come to ask for help in their family life. They are testimonies and practices of prayer, not an automatic affirmation of supernatural.
Legend
The intervention of the ox, the repeated finding of the statue and the supernatural attribution of some graces are part of the narrative of the sanctuary. The sources consulted do not provide a file to present these elements as proven miracles. The book retains the legend with respect, but it differentiates the history of the chapel and the basilica from the religious interpretation of its origins.
Ecclesial State
It consists of a Marian Catholic sanctuary in the diocese of Montpellier and a documented pilgrimage activity. A formal pronunciation that approves an apparition or declares the finding of the image supernatural does not appear in the cross-sectional sources. It is recorded permitted Catholic veneration and local tradition, without presenting the foundational accounts as an approved apparition.
Anecdotes and stories
The name Notre-Dame du Bel Amour expresses the family dimension of current devotion. The diocese mentions people who come with difficulties to have children and families who trust their projects there. He also recalls priestly and religious vocations linked to the graces attributed to the sanctuary. All this is presented as a pastoral memory and testimony of the faithful.
Prayer
Holy Mary of the Suc, Mother of Jesus and Mother of hope, intercede before God for marriages, for those who wish to receive a child, for vocations and for those who live a trial. Help us to ask with confidence and to receive every grace with humility, truth and charity. Amen.
