Our Lady of Ta'Pinu of the All Nations Marian Centre (Merrimu, Australia)

Marian devotion

Where is he?

The All Nations Marian Centre, dedicated to Our Lady of Ta'Pinu, is in 15 Flanagans Drive, Merrimu, Victoria 3340, in the surroundings of Bacchus Marsh and within the Archdiocese of Melbourne, Australia. The address appears in the information of the center itself. OpenStreetMap identifies the place of worship in node 12420427798, whose coordinates are those shown on the map.

The precision is verified_building: the cartographed enclosure has been located, not the inner position of an image or altar. This Australian place prolongs Maltese devotion; it should not be confused with the original shrine of Ta'Pinu in Gozo.

Documented history

The story published by the center explains that in 1993 Bishop Nicholas J. Cauchi of Gozo-Malta asked the Archbishop of Melbourne, Francis T. Little, to open a Marian center dedicated to Our Lady of Ta'Pinu. After the approval, the Bishop of Gozo provided a loan to acquire the land and the first mass was held there on 23 March 1993. The source presents these data as the beginning of the Australian sanctuary.

The project was conceived as a place open to different peoples. That is why it is also named after All Nations Marian Centre. The centre itself describes twelve oratoriums raised by Melbourne communities and dedicated to various Marian titles. Among the communities mentioned are Maltese, Italian, Filipino, Hispanic, Srilanquesa, Indian, Portuguese, Slovenian, Vietnamese, Polish and Indonesian, along with an Australian oratory dedicated to Mary Auxiliary.

The statue and the celebrations of the enclosure are part of the contemporary devotional history of the place. The website of the sanctuary points out that devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary has been held there since March 1994 and that the prayer of the rosary and the mass are maintained. The existence of these practices is a pastoral fact; it is not presented as proof of a local apparition.

Tradition

The tradition that comes to Merrimu comes from Ta'Pinu on the island of Gozo. The Australian centre retains this memory in a context of emigration and inter-community meeting. The image, mass and rosary allow the faithful to maintain a living relationship with an apvocation of their land of origin and to share it with other Catholics in Australia.

Marian devotion is understood as veneration and intercession. Mary is asked to bring the pleas to God and to lead the faithful to Jesus Christ; worship corresponds only to God. The graces that a person can attribute to prayer must remain a personal witness until there is sufficient medical and ecclesial evidence.

Legend

The supernatural history linked to Ta'Pinu belongs to the tradition of the Gozo shrine and does not automatically move to the centre of Merrimu. There is no Australian apparition or approved local miracle in the sources consulted. Nor is a canonical coronation of the replica claimed here.

Ecclesial State

The state indicated is permitted veneration: there is a Marian Catholic center that publicly celebrates Mass and Prayer and presents itself with a history of local approval for its opening. The sources consulted do not contain a pronunciation of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on a supernatural phenomenon in Merrimu. The status of a sanctuary or pilgrimage centre alone does not amount to the approval of an apparition.

Anecdotes and stories

The most significant feature of the place is its international vocation. Oratoriums are not an undifferentiated collection: they express how different migrant communities have taken their images, languages and forms of prayer to the same Australian space. The name "All Nations" sums up this desire for reception.

The continuity between the request of the Bishop of Gozo in 1993, the first Mass of the same year and the life of prayer that the center has described since 1994 is also significant. It is a documented history of foundation and devotion; it is not necessary to turn it into a story of wonders to recognize its human and ecclesial value.

Prayer

Holy Mary, Our Lady of Ta'Pinu, intercede before God for those who pray in Merrimu, for the migrant families and for all the peoples who seek a home. Take us to Jesus Christ, teach us to live with hope and help us to serve those who suffer. Amen.
