Marian devotion
Our Lady of Westminster is the Marian image of revered alabaster in Westminster Cathedral, London. The documented history of the statue refers to a work of art preserved and dedicated in the cathedral; it does not know that it is an apparition or that a supernatural approval is attributed to it.
Where is he?
The image is venerated on Westminster Cathedral, Francis Street, Westminster, London, England. The position of the map corresponds to the cathedral building identified by OpenStreetMap.
Documented history
The official Westminster Cathedral page describes an image of Our Lady with the Child, acquired for the cathedral in 1955 and dedicated on December 8 of that year. It's carved in English alabaster, probably from Chellaston. The figure represents Mary sitting on a throne as Queen of Heaven and carries a scepter of lily; in the original polychrome there are still some remains of painting. The history of the piece before its acquisition in the art market is not fully recorded.
The image also has a documented relationship with the Anglican restoration of Our Lady of Pew, in Westminster Abbey: the cathedral page explains that the statue of the Abbey was inspired by this English Madonna of the 15th century alabaster. They are two different places and two ecclesial communities, so their chips are not merged.
Tradition and Legend
The statue is understood as part of the recovery of the English Marian heritage prior to the Reformation. This devotional interpretation does not show that it was one of Westminster's old images: the provenance prior to his arrival in the art market is not recorded.
Ecclesial State
It is a Catholic image publicly venerated in a metropolitan cathedral; its veneration is permitted. There is no approval as a miraculous image, apparition or private revelation, or specific decree of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Prayer
Holy Mary, Mother of Christ and Queen of Heaven, pray for the Church and for those who seek the Lord. Take us always to your Son and teach us to serve with humility. Amen.
