The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Italian district of Manhattan is the most important sanctuary of the Italian community of New York. It was founded in 1884.
History of the sanctuary
The church was built by Italian immigrants who arrived in New York in the 19th century. The Virgin of Mount Carmel is the patron of Italian sailors.
Every July 16, the Italian community celebrates the feast of the Virgin of Mount Carmel with a procession through the streets of Manhattan.
