History of Marian devotion in Oman
Christianity in Oman has a history that dates back to apostolic times (in the case of some Eastern traditions) or to the arrival of European missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries. Devotion to the Virgin Mary, although practiced by a minority of the population, has a significant presence among local Catholic communities. Mary is venerated as the Mother of God and protector of Christians in contexts where they are often a minority.
The Marian advocacy in Oman reflects both the missionary tradition (Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Fatima, the Immaculate Conception) and the local expressions of Marian piety. The Christian communities, through their parishes, schools and social works, keep alive the devotion to Mary as the Mother of all peoples.
The Catholic community in Oman, under the jurisdiction of the Apostolic Vicariate of South Arabia, consists mainly of Filipinos, Indians and Lebanese. The churches of San Pedro and San Pablo in Ruwi (Mascate), San Francisco Javier in Salalah and the Church of Sohar are the main centers of Catholic worship. The Virgin Mary is especially venerated as Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Arabia, an advocation that unites all Catholics on the Arabian Peninsula.
