History of Marian devotion in Palau
Christianity reached the islands of Palau by the hand of missionaries in the 19th and 20th centuries. The devotion to the Virgin Mary, introduced by the evangelizers, was rooted in the local Christian communities, which found in Mary a maternal figure close to their own culture.
The Marian advocacy in Palau reflects the diversity of missionary traditions: the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady of Lourdes. The small Catholic communities keep the devotion to Mary alive through the prayer of the Rosary and the celebration of the Marian parties.

The Spanish Marian Heritage in Palau
Palau was evangelized by Spanish and cappuccino missionaries since the 19th century, and Marian devotion was deeply rooted in the Palauan culture. Spain administered the islands as part of the Eastern Carolines, and the missionaries introduced the veneration of the Virgin Mary under the title of the Sacred Heart, which became the patron of the archipelago. The Spanish influence left an indelible mark on toponymy and religious traditions: many Palauan families retain Spanish names and devotion to the Rosary is a daily practice in Catholic homes.
After the German and Japanese administration, the Catholic faith remained firm. Currently, approximately 45 per cent of the population is Catholic, the highest percentage of Micronesia. The diocese of the Carolines, based in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Koror, covers the states of Palau. Every year, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (June) and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (December 8) are major celebrations that bring together faithful from all the islands, with processions that go through Koror and songs in Palauan that praise Mary as "Mlechei to Mary" (Queen Mary).
Immaculate Conception of Melekeok
In Melekeok, the administrative capital of Palau, is the parish of the Immaculate Conception, a temple built in the 1960s that serves the Catholic communities of the center of the island of Babeldaob. The church is known for its architecture that fuses traditional Palauan elements (roofed with palm leaves and open structure for natural ventilation) with Catholic liturgical design. The image of the Immaculate, brought from Spain, is a size of polychrome, Filipino baroque style wood that the faithful dress with shell necklaces and plumery flowers during the festivities.

Our Lady of the Rosary of Angaur
On the remote island of Angaur, south of Palau, the small Catholic community keeps alive devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary in a chapel built after World War II. Angaur was the scene of intense fighting in 1944, and the oral tradition recalls that the local soldiers, many of them Catholics, prayed the Rosary asking for the intercession of the Virgin during the battle. After the war, the community erected a grotto in honor of the Virgin of the Rosary in the place where a mysterious light appeared - according to local tradition - which the inhabitants interpreted as a Marian sign. Every October, the faithful of Angaur celebrate a ninth that concludes with a procession around the island.
"Our Lady of the Rosary of Angaur, pray for us.
Our Lady of Fatima of Peleliu
On the island of Peleliu, the scene of one of the most bloody battles of the Second World War in the Pacific (1944), the chapel of Our Lady of Fatima is a memorial of peace and reconciliation. The chapel was built in 1970 by Japanese and American war veterans converted to Catholicism, as a sign of forgiveness and brotherhood. The image of Our Lady of Fatima, a bronze size that represents the Virgin with the three pastoralists, was donated by the Portuguese Church. Every May 13, the Catholic community of Palau celebrates a mass for peace in Peleliu, reminding the fallen and asking for the intercession of the Virgin so that war will never be repeated again.
"Our Lady of Fatima of Peleliu, pray for us.
The Marian history of Palau is also marked by the figure of Blessed Pedro Calungsod, the young Filipino catechist martyr in Guam in 1672, whose devotion extended to Palau. His example of fidelity to the Virgin Mary inspired generations of Palauan catechists who kept the Catholic faith alive on the islands even during periods of persecution. After typhoon Bopha in 2012, which devastated the islands, the Catholic community gathered around the Virgin of the Sacred Heart to rebuild their homes and churches, demonstrating the strength of a faith that has overcome wars, natural disasters and political changes.
The Catholic community of Palau has experienced significant growth in recent decades, thanks in part to the testimony of local catechists who bring faith to the most remote islands of the archipelago. The Schoenstatt movement, present in Palau since 1995, has revitalized Marian devotion, especially among young people. The Shrine of Schoenstatt of Mary Queen of Peace, in the hills of Koror, is a place of pilgrimage and retreat where the faithful renew their consecration to the Virgin Mary. The October 18, anniversary of the Schoenstatt foundation, is celebrated with a procession with torches that illuminates the slopes of the island.
