Marian devotion
Virgin of the Old
Panama City
The Virgin of the Old is the patron of Panama. It was the first Marian image of America.
In 1510, the Spaniards brought an image of the Virgin of Ancient to Old Panama. The image was the first to come to America and was the first to be venerated in the New World.
The Panamanians venerate her as the mother who accompanied the first settlers. The image is preserved in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption.
Every August 15, Panamanians celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin with processions and songs.
