Ouaré's mission in Hienghène

In the bay of Hienghène, on the north-east coast of New Caledonia, the Marist parents founded in 1897 the mission of Ouaré, by the sea and under the columnar pines. His church, built in 1930 and dedicated to St. Peter, continues to bring together the Kanak Catholic community every Sunday.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The Marist missionaries had arrived in New Caledonia on December 20, 1843, landing in Balade with Bishop Douarre; half a century later, in 1897, the mission was established in the tribe of Ouaré, a village already in the uprisings of the Bay of Hienghène of 1849.
  • The church of the mission, built in 1930 on the edge of the beach, with the colonnars dominating the bay, is the only registered Catholic temple in the commune, under the title of San Pedro.
  • The mission keeps faith alive with Sunday Mass and has been holding the Catholic school of Ouaré since ancient times, which continues to educate the children of the area.
  • From this land of Hienghène came Jean- Marie Tjibaou (1936- 1989), who was a Catholic priest before becoming mayor of Hienghène and in the great voice of his people: a sign of the deep roots of faith in this valley.

Party: There is no Marian party of its own · Place: Hienghène (New Caledonia)

On the shore of the bay of Hienghène, the small church of the mission of Ouaré, founded by the Marists in 1897, guards more than a century of kanak faith. There, between the sea and the pine trees, the community continues to gather every Sunday for the Eucharist.

The Christian community of Hienghène is kept by Saint Mary, Mother of the Church.
