Our Lady of Peace of San Miguel
In the Basilica of San Miguel, the image of Our Lady of Peace, Master Patroness of El Salvador, is venerated. The tradition tells that the image came in the late 17th century within a sealed box found on the Pacific coast and that, as it was led to the loins of a donkey, the animal stopped before the parish church of San Miguel on November 21: there the Lady wanted to stay, and there she continued.
🌹 Wonders and anecdotes
- The box found on the beach could not be opened until it reached San Miguel: inside appeared a beautiful image of the Virgin with the Child in arms. With his arrival, hostilities between the peoples of the region ceased, and therefore the people called it Our Lady of Peace.
- On September 21, 1787, during the eruption of the Chaparrastique volcano, the Migueleans took the image to the main door of the temple and the lava stream changed direction. In memory of that favor, the Virgin holds a palm of gold in her right hand, and the place where the lava twisted its course is today called "Miracle of Peace."
- It was crowned canonically on November 21, 1921, by the privilege of Pope Benedict XV obtained by Monsignor Juan Antonio Dueñas and Argumedo, the first bishop of San Miguel; the ceremony was held before the cathedral after the pontifical mass. On October 10, 1966, Pope Paul VI declared her a perpetual principal patron of the Republic of El Salvador.
- The present cathedral is a memory of a century of fidelity: President Gerardo Barrios laid the first stone on 21 November 1862 and the works ended exactly a hundred years later, on 21 November 1962. In 1903 a ray burned the shrimp where the image was kept and burned its dress, but the size was intact.
