Our Lady of Copacabana

Cusco, Peru

The Virgin of Copacabana is one of the oldest advocations in South America.

Country: Cusco, Peru
Type: Advocation / Apparition
Nuestra Señora de Copacabana
Our Lady of Copacabana

In the 16th century, the indigenous Tito Yupanqui carved an image of the Virgin for a church on Lake Titicaca. When he tried to take her somewhere else, the image always returned to Copacabana.

Tradition says the angels finished the work at night, as Tito did not know how to work gold. The image has Inca princess clothes, merging European faith with Andean culture.

The pilgrims go up the hill of 3,800 meters to venerate the Virgin, who is also patron of the sailors of the Titicaca.

The Virgin of Copacabana unites the Spanish with the Inca, the European with the Andean.
