Origin and history
The well of Mary rises on the only spring of Nazareth. According to an ancient Eastern tradition, gathered in the ProtGospel of James, it was here - as the Virgin drew water - that she first heard the voice of the angel Gabriel, before the scene of the Annunciation in her house. The spring water still runs through the Greek Orthodox church of San Gabriel.

One of the most affectionate Marian places in Nazareth, venerated by Catholics and Orthodox.
