The Basilica of Our Lady of the Seven Dolores of Navrongo
Navrongo · Ghana · The "Earth Cathedral" in northern Ghana
At the northern end of Ghana, border with Burkina Faso, the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Seven Dolores of Navrongo is one of the most unique religious buildings in West Africa: a cathedral built in tapial (stony land) that combines Sahelian architecture with Catholic art.
A cathedral of earth
The Navrongo Cathedral was built between 1906 and 1910 by the spiritist missionaries who evangelized northern Ghana, a Sahelian region of dry savannah, mostly animist and Muslim population, and extreme weather conditions. The material chosen was the tapial (ground in stone), the traditional constructive technique of the Sahel: thick mud walls that regulate the inner temperature while maintaining freshness during the day and heat during the night.
The building combines the local architecture with neo-Gothic elements imported by the missionaries: pointed arches, vitiales with Marian motifs and a bell tower that rises on the northern plain. The result is a unique architectural hybrid in Ghana and throughout West Africa.
The Seven Dolores of Mary
The advocation of Our Lady of the Seven Dolores refers to the seven pains that the Catholic tradition attributes to the Virgin Mary: the prophecy of Simeon, the flight to Egypt, the loss of the Child Jesus in the temple, the encounter with Jesus on the way to Calvary, the crucifixion, the descent and the burial. This advocation, very widespread in Catholic spirituality, found in northern Ghana a fertile ground: local communities, familiar with suffering (droughts, famine, malaria), found in the Dolores de Maria a mirror of their own experience.
The elevation to lower basilica
In 2006, Pope Benedict XVI raised the Cathedral of Navrongo to the category of Minor Basilicaa recognition of its historical and architectural importance. The ceremony was held by the Apostolic Nuncio in Ghana and assisted by bishops from all over the Sahel region.
Northern Ghana: land of missions
Northern Ghana is a region different from the south of the country: poorer, more rural, with a greater Muslim and animist presence. Catholic evangelization in the north was later and more difficult than in the south, where Europeans established their first coastal missions. The Cathedral of Navrongo is the symbol of this tenacious evangelization of the margins.
