The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception of Bangui
Bangui · República Centroafricana · Catedral metropolitana
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, located in the heart of Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic, is the seat of the archdiocese of Bangui. The cathedral has been a refuge during civil wars and a symbol of hope in one of the poorest and most conflict countries in Africa.
The Central African Republic: a country in crisis
The Central African Republic (RCA) is one of the poorest and most unstable countries in the world. Since its independence from France in 1960, it has experienced multiple coups, civil wars and humanitarian crises. The most recent conflict, which erupted in 2012 between the government and rebel coalitions, has caused thousands of deaths and millions of displaced persons.
In this context of violence, the Catholic Church has played a crucial role as a mediator and refuge. Churches, Catholic schools and health centres have been places of protection for the civilian population, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.
La catedral de Bangui
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, built during the French colonial period, is a simple-style building that has resisted wars and crises. During the 2014-2014 fighting, the cathedral hosted thousands of displaced Muslims and Christians fleeing violence. The image of the Virgin Mary on the main altar remained intact, a sign of hope for the refugees.
The archdiocese of Bangui, erected in 1909, is the oldest in the Central African Republic. The spiritist missionaries were the first evangelizers of the region, working among the Bavarian peoples, band, mandja and sango.
The Virgin Mary in Central African Culture
The people of the RCA - baya, band, mandja, sango, yakoma - have matrilineal traditions where the mother is the central figure of the family. The Virgin Mary has been naturally welcomed in these cultures: the Central African faithful venerate her as the "mother" of the Christian community, which comforts those who suffer and protect the most vulnerable.
The visit of Pope Francisco (2015)
In November 2015, Pope Francis visited the Central African Republic in a gesture of solidarity with one of the poorest countries in the world. The Pope opened the Holy Gate of Bangui Cathedral, symbolically opening the Jubilee of Mercy in Central Africa. The visit was a moment of hope for a country devastated by war.
The Church as a mediator of peace
The Catholic Church in the RCA has been an active mediator in peace processes. Central African bishops have participated in negotiations between the government and rebel groups, and parishes have been spaces for interreligious dialogue. Marian devotion, shared by Christians and Muslims (who venerate Mary / Maryam), has been a bridge between communities.
