The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation of Ibadan
Ibadan · State of Oyo · Nigeria · The largest cathedral in western Nigeria
The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Annunciation of Ibadan, the third largest city in Africa, is the seat of the archdiocese of Ibadan and one of the most imposing Catholic temples in southwest Nigeria.
Ibadan: the city of the red ceilings
Ibadan, known as the "city of the red ceilings" for the extension of its roofs seen from the surrounding hills, is the third largest city in Africa after Lagos and Kinshasa. Founded in the 19th century as a Yoruba military camp, it became a major commercial, university and religious centre.
The archdiocese of Ibadan is one of the largest in Nigeria, with a Catholic population in hundreds of thousands. The cathedral, dedicated to the Annunciation of Mary, is the liturgical center of this vast community.
The Yoruba Land Annunciation
The advocation of the Annunciation - the moment when the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the Mother of God - has a particular resonance in the Yoruba culture. The Yoruba have a tradition of communication with the divine through diviners (warningwo) and spiritual intermediaries. The Annunciation, as a moment of direct communication between God and Mary, is understood by the Yoruba as a prophetic act.
The University and the Cathedral
Ibadan houses the University of Ibadan, the oldest in Nigeria (founded in 1948), and a Catholic intellectual elite that has produced prestigious theologians, bishops and writers. The cathedral is not just a place of worship: it is a space where faith and intelligence meet.
