The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Perpetual Relief of Niamey
Niamey · Niger · Catholic faith in the world's poorest country
The Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de la Perpetua Socorro de Niamey is the seat of the diocese of Niamey and the main Catholic temple of Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world and of the overwhelming Muslim majority. The small Nigerian Catholic community maintains its faith in extreme conditions.
Niger: the poorest country in the world
Niger is systematically the last in the United Nations Human Development Index. With a population of about 25 million, of which over 98 per cent are Muslims, the Nigerian Catholic community is one of the smallest and most vulnerable in Africa. The White Fathers established Niamey's mission in the early 20th century, and the cathedral was built in the center of the capital.
A faith in the margins
The Niamey Cathedral does not have the grandiosity of Yamusukro or the antiquity of Cidade Velha. It is a simple building, adapted to the Sahelian climate (temperatures above 45 ° C in summer), which houses a small but fervent community. The Nigerian faithful are, for the most part, first or second-generation converts that have abandoned Islam or animist traditions to embrace Catholicism, an act of great courage in a context where conversion can lead to social exclusion.
Our Lady of the Perpetual Relief
The advocation of Our Lady of Perpetual Relief, linked to the Redemptorists but widely spread by the White Fathers in the Sahel, is the patron of the diocese of Niamey. The Byzantine icon of the Mother who holds her Son against the threat has a particular resonance in a country where threats - drought, famine, terrorism, poverty - are a constant.
